Right where American Idol left off, So You Think You Can Dance has picked up! Season five is under way, and they are beginning auditions for season six this month too! We chatted with the super sweet host Cat Deeley for deets on the new season!
J-14: We are huge fans of the show and love watching all of these unique forms of dance! Are you surprised at how diverse the dancers and their styles are?
Cat: That's what we like to celebrate -- people from all different races, religions, backgrounds, colors, creeds. As long as they've got the talent, passion, and they're prepared to work hard, and show their personality, they are more than welcome to be on the show. We're looking for stars. We're not necessarily looking for a certain body type or a specific style or anything like that. I'm certainly not asking people to fit in certain boxes!
J-14: What style of dance were you really wowed by the first time you saw it?
Cat: Choreographer Lil C, came on our show and did Krumping for the first time, and it was absolutely incredible. It's almost like fighting and sparring, and there's so much pent-up aggression to it, but it's in the form of dance, which I just think is incredible. Last season Twitch and Kherington did an amazing Krump routine, and it was so different. Kherington was a contemporary dancer, and normally it's all about lines and elegance and flowing, and this was hard-hitting and tough and street, and it's great to see people take on different styles like that and really own them. We take a street dancer or breaker and we go, "what you do is absolutely amazing, your specialty is incredible, but now we're going to put you in a sparkly shirt and tight black pants, and you're going to perform a salsa!"
J-14: What is your favorite part about the show?
Cat: The best part of the show for me is seeing the grace and being involved in it in a very organic way. If the kids are lining up on the street at 7:30 in the morning and the snow's coming down in New York, it's really interesting to follow their journey and see how they grow and see they do transition into stars that are incredibly professional and know what they're doing. It's a real growth, and to be part of that is really mesmerizing.
J-14: Do you think Season Five will be better than the others?
Cat: I think every year it seems to get bigger and better. The stunts are bigger, the choreography is more impressive. Because the show comes back bigger every single year, the dancers are elevated to an even higher position once the show finishes.
Are you guys into SYTYCDance? Did you watch last night's auditions? What did you think? Any of you dancers out there?? Do you like American Idol or Dance more? Let us know what you think below!
