15-year-old Callan McAuliffe stole our hearts in his new film Flipped (in theaters August 27) and kept us laughing when he stopped by the J-14 office to chat about acting, Australia, and his very unique name.
Flipped tells the supersweet story of Bryce (Callan) and Juli (Madeline Carroll), following their relationship from grade school through junior high as they learn about the ups and downs of life and love. And Callan's not slowing down any time soon -- he's currently filming next year's fantasy flick I Am Number Four with Glee's Dianna Agron and Beastly's Alex Pettyfer!
J-14: How did you get started acting?
Callan McAuliffe: I messed up my leg. Since I couldn't do anything else on the weekends, I did auditions. I was recommended over here in America and did an audition for Flipped -- which was my first American audition -- and I got it!
J-14: Not only did you get a part in Flipped, but the starring role! How was being on your first movie set?
Callan: I've been on sets before, but it was really just ads and things, so it wasn't that exciting. But Flipped was amazing. Everyone was so nice and so kind. You never know when you're on a new set -- people could be crazy or people could be just running around, yelling at each other and these arguments. But there was never an argument and there was no stress or anything. Everyone was just really nice.
J-14: You and costar Madeline Carroll have such great chemistry in Flipped. Do you get along well in real life?
Callan: Yeah, yeah, yeah! We have a brother-sister relationship.
J-14: Is it hard being away from your home in Australia?
Callan: Well it is funny because I live in Australia, but I was only at home for about three months in the past year. I'm in America more than I'm in Australia now! But my mom gets to travel with me, and we go back to Australia often.
J-14: Callan is a pretty unusual name. Does it mean something?
Callan: My parents were initially going to name me Callum, but then my cousin named one of her sons Callum. So my parents had to find a name that was different, but they were lazy and just changed a couple letters. So no, Callan doesn't mean anything at all.
