Celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Hey J-14ers,

As most of you awesome J-14 readers know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While it's important for all females to get empowered and be knowledgeable year-round, October is a great time to really learn about breast cancer prevention and research.

This is an important cause for many people, myself included. I've had three relatives pass away from breast cancer, all on my mom's side of the family -- my great aunt Helen in 1994, my aunt Lydia in 2007, and my cousin End this past summer. In 2008, I participated in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in New York City in honor of them. This is me at the finish line:

Though I'm not walking this year, I am supporting friends who are walking all across the country. I hope you'll support breast cancer awareness in your own way as well, whether it's by helping friends, donating, or just learning more about how you can protect yourself.

J-14 is also supporting the cause -- all month long, we'll be telling you about different companies and celebs that are helping out. First up is the Hard Rock Café. The chain is celebrating its 11th year of Pinktober, and they launched the month-long event with a kick off party on September 28 that American Idol's Crystal Bowersox and Grammy winner and breast cancer survivor Melissa Etheridge both performed at. Throughout the fall, you'll be able to catch various emerging acts performing at your local Hard Rock Café, and you can purchase limited edition 2010 Pinktober products, including the t-shirt, pin, and bracelet pictured above, here.
