In celebration of the first half of the final Twilight Saga installment, J-14 caught up with Taylor Lautner to talk all about Breaking Dawn, Part 1. He gave us the inside scoop on the now infamous imprinting scene, his emotional last day on set, and all of the ways he relates to Jacob's love for Bella in real life!
Q: First and foremost: Tell us all about the imprinting scene!
Taylor Lautner: Luckily we had Stephenie Meyer on set the entire time and, trust me, I asked her a million times, "Ok, explain to me one more time what imprinting is and did you ever envision what Jacob looked like, what is he doing when he's imprinting?" It was very, very confusing. And then it didn't help when we actually filmed it they put an "x" on the wall and said, "This is Renesmee. Walk in the room, look at the 'x' and you're going to imprint." It was tough!
Q: Were you at all bothered that Edward gets a hot vampire and all Jacob gets is a baby?
Taylor: I've gotten over that by now. But I remember the first time reading the book, I was like, "Wait, Jacob's been trying to get Bella this entire time and he strikes out so he goes for her child?" I was so confused. It took me a second. You have to tread lightly because it is a very special thing and it isn't romantic at all.
Q: After playing Jacob for five films, which parts of the character will stick with you?
Taylor: I love Jacob. Jacob is one of the most loyal people, one of the most persistent people -- he has some amazing qualities that I hope I can learn from and implement into my own life. But [I won't miss] not wearing clothes! I love Vancouver but we always had to film when it was cold and rainy and gross.
Q: Do you understand why Jacob chose to pursue Bella for so long, even after she was married?
Taylor: I go back and forth with Jacob's persistence. Most of the time, I can understand it because there's been things in my life that I wanted so much, was told 'no' and just thought, 'I've got to keep going.' But there were moments where I was thinking, "Dude, you've got to get over it." She's married now. It's about time to move on.
Q: Can you tell us about the last scene that you taped?
Taylor: I knew filming the last scene was going to be tough but it was actually more emotional for all of us than we expected. It didn't help that my very last scene was with Kristen; it was the last dance between Bella and Jacob towards the end of their wedding and it's really Jacob saying goodbye to Bella. Kristen and I just looked at each other and I don't think we even really had anything to say because the emotion from the scene was overwhelming.
