He may play the villain in 'Let it Shine', but when J-14 caught up with Brandon Mychal Smith at the premiere in New York City, he couldn't have been more friendly! He even shared personal stories about an amazing date and a hilarious MySpace blunder. Read on for more about 'Let it Shine', which airs tonight at 8/7c on Disney Channel!
J-14: Tell us about your character in 'Let It Shine'.
Brandon Mychal Smith: My role as 'Lord of Da Bling' is the king of the rap scene. [He's] got a huge ego and a swagger that matches that. He ends up clashing with a few of the characters throughout the film because he feels like he can't be beat. I basically play the villain in this film with a bit of charm.
J-14: How did you get inspired to play such a dislikeable character?
Brandon: I tried to rely on times when I've felt unstoppable. I relied on experiences in my life when I felt victorious, like I was on top of my game.
J-14: What's your favorite musical track in the film?
Brandon: "Tonight's the Night" is a huge track. It gets you hyped and off your feet and feeling good. You'll spill your popcorn all over your couch! This movie is going to make you feel like you can do anything.
J-14: There's a crazy and complicated love story in this movie. What's the most romantic thing you've ever done?
Brandon: It was on Valentine's Day last year with my beautiful girlfriend. I laid roses from the road all the way up to the dinner area, and I made dinner and really put my heart into it. I even spelled out her name in rose petals!
J-14: 'Let is Shine' is about a case of mistaken identity. Can you relate?
Brandon: One time I hit up who I thought was an old friend on MySpace because we hadn't talked in a while. It turned out to be some kid who was just messing with me. They're probably still laughing at me!
