J-14 Exclusive Q&A with Daniel Radcliffe

DanielRadcliffeWomanInBlack.jpg

When Harry Potter was 11 years old, he was whisked away from his rough childhood living under the stairs and ultimately transformed into the hero of the wizarding world. When Daniel Radcliffe was 11 years old, he was whisked away from his quietly normal childhood living in London, England, and ultimately transformed into one of the richest and most famous stars in the entire world.

Now 22 years old, Dan not only has eight Harry Potter films under his belt, but he's also starred on stage in serious plays like Equus and fun-loving musicals like How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and his face can be seen on everything from Legos to amusement park rides.

But what truly makes Dan Radcliffe so impressive is that despite being one of the most famous people on this earth for more than half of his life, he's so extremely normal.

When J-14 Magazine sat down with him one-on-one to chat about his first post-Potter project, The Woman in Black (in theaters today), he welcomed us into the room and offered us drinks and snacks before we sat down to chat. Modest, self-depricating, thoughtful, and downright hilarious, Daniel Radcliffe is proof that just because you're rich and famous doesn't mean you have to act rich and famous. In fact, you can be one heck of a normal guy... who just happens to be uber talented and super successful.

J-14: The Woman in Black is the first movie you've done after playing Harry Potter in eight films. Why was this the first role you chose?
Daniel Radcliffe:
I read the script for The Women in Black about two hours after doing my last shot on Potter in late July 2010. I saw it as an opportunity to make a horror film that was terrifying but also poignant, tragic, and sad, which is not always a combination you have. Also, I'm playing older than I normally have, which is different for people, and I'm playing a father, which automatically is a bit of a leap for people. They might be going in thinking, "Oh we're going to see Harry Potter do his new film," but like ten minutes in, they're just really not.

J-14: The film delves into human fears -- did you have any irrational fears growing up?
Daniel:
That's the thing about a phobia -- it has to be irrational. My big fear is being buried alive, but that's quite a thing to be legitimately scared of. It was always something that freaked me out. I also have a problem with cockroaches. But I think there are things in everybody's life that they suddenly become worried or frightened of. Those are the moments that test our character as to whether we can address them or continue to be affected by them.

J-14 Video: Did Harry Potter Buy Edward Cullen's Volvo Car?

HarryPotter7DanielRadcliffe.jpg

He's saved the world from evil in the Harry Potter films, he's succeeded without really trying on Broadway in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and last night, Daniel Radcliffe hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time.

Although there was speculation whether or not there would be any Harry Potter sketches on SNL, there were tons of wizard references throughout the episode -- and even an entire sketch called Hogwarts Castle 2020, which shows what life is like back at the wizarding school years down the road.

Dan Radcliffe played the future version of Harry Potter, who's struggling to pay his mortgage and still hangs around Hogwarts -- and he even said he bought a Volvo car.

A Volvo in the wizarding world? What happened to the flying car Harry and Ron drove to Hogwarts... or was that a reference to The Twilight Saga's Edward Cullen's car of choice, the Volvo?

Watch SNL's Hogwarts Castle 2020 and let us know what you think:

Wizarding World of Harry Potter Goes Hollywood

WizardingWorldOfHarryPotterHollywoodOliverJamesPhelps.jpg

Just weeks after J-14 Magazine apparated to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort to celebrate the release of the final Harry Potter movie on DVD with the cast and filmmakers, comes even more exciting news for Muggles and wizards alike... the Wizarding World is going coast to coast!

That's right -- another Harry Potter-themed attraction will be opening at the original Universal Studios Hollywood in Hollywood, California.

Oliver and James Phelps, who play Fred and George Weasley in the Harry Potter films, had the honor of making the big announcement at Universal Studios Hollywood yesterday over a toast of, what else, Butterbeer!

And that's not the only magical news. In addition to the Harry Potter attraction opening in California, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, which originally opened in June 2010, will also "significantly expand."

"I am delighted that the Wizarding World of Harry Potter has been so popular with fans since the opening in Orlando last year," Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling says. "I am sure that the teams at Universal and Warner Bros. will bring their expertise and attention to detail to Hollywood to make this new experience equally as exciting."

After experiencing the magic ourselves last month, J-14 can officially vouch for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter -- and can't wait to shed our Muggleness and go back to the wizarding worlds in Florida and soon California!
