Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber were once the golden couple, a pair that bought fandoms together and often made Jelena shippers’ hearts soar with their mega-cute public displays of affection. The Biebs rented out an arena so Sel could watch her favorite movie, they went on vacations together, walked the red carpet arm in arm and it seemed like their love story would be one for the ages.

Now it’s continuing! Well, kind of. In photos captured by TMZ, JB’s car was spotted arriving at Sel’s house ten minutes after the “Bad Liar” singer rolled up at her place. Before Jelena fans get too worked up about this reunion, they were reportedly hanging out with other mutual friends — and The Weeknd knows that his girlfriend is in contact with her ex. He simply didn’t attend the get-together because he’s currently on tour. In Touch Weekly had previously reported that Justin and Selena are reconnecting, but we’re still shook over this whole ordeal.

Well, as you know by now, Justin and Selena’s relationship has been one giant roller coaster, filled with many off-and-on-again, ‘one minute they’re back together the next they’re not’ moments, confusing Instagram posts, and super honest confessions about how basically that relationship was one big mind-game. Literally for all of us who were invested in this saga.

Well, it’s been years since these two have found their way back to each other and since Selena is happily dating The Weeknd now and JB has had his fair share of romances since their final split too, it’s safe to say they have finally made a clean break from each other, romantically. Besides hanging out IRL, they’re still basically always talking about each other, in the most indirect way possible of course.

In a new interview with InStyle, the “Bad Liar” songstress opened up about her new relationship with BF Abel and how she’s learned from her past relationships to not let the guy she’s dating to define who she is.

“I don’t depend on one area of my life to make me happy. It’s really important for me to love and nourish my friends and family and to make sure that I never get influenced by a guy. I’ve wanted to be in a strong headspace for years, and I really wasn’t. Before, I was so young and easily influenced, and I’d feel insecure. You want someone to add to your life, not to complete you, if that makes sense. I’m lucky because he’s more of a best friend than anything else,” Selena said.

OK, now we’re all beyond happy to see things are going well for Sel and Abel and that she is simply a stronger, better version of herself. But we can’t help but pick up on that subtle shade. Or rather, honesty about Selena’s former romances. Her most notable ex-boyfriend is Justin and while she doesn’t directly call him out, it’s easy to connect the dots here. From an outsider’s perspective, their constant back and forth, breaking up and getting back together was clearly not healthy for either of them, especially since they were young teenagers when it all began. Those years are some of the toughest and the Selena and Justin drama was at its peak during that time in their lives.

And what about Justin, you ask? Well, he has broken his silence on Instagram addressing his choice to cancel the rest of his Purpose World Tour and in the open letter to his fans, he too references his past relationships.

“Learning and growing hasn’t always been easy but knowing im not alone has kept me going,” he wrote. “I have let my insecurities get the best of me at times, I let my broken relationships dictate the way I acted toward people and the way I treated them! i let bitterness, jealously and fear run my life.!!!! I am extremely blessed to have people in the past few years help me build my character back up reminding me of who I am and who I want to be!!!. Reminding me my past decisions and past relationships don’t dictate my future decisions and my future relationships,” Justin wrote.

So let’s break this down a bit: yes, the “Cold Water” singer would be referencing any toxic friendships he’s had and he has dated other girls besides Selena, like Hailey Baldwin and Sofia Richie. But those were more flings if we’re being honest here, definitely not as intense of a relationship as he had with Sel and his back and forth with her has been publicly played out the most, so safe to say he’s referencing their time together too. How crazy is it that both Selena and Justin are opening up about past relationships feeding into their insecurities? We can’t help but draw the parallels and it’s clear the Jelena saga really had a profound effect on each of them.

Regardless, that ship has sailed and there’s about a 99.9% chance these two will never get back together in a romantic sense. They’ve moved on and are obviously in much better places than they once were, or at least they’re getting there. Somehow though, no matter how far removed they are from each other, there will always be a shred of a connection between them. And it looks like they’re trying to maintain a friendship.
