Growing up in the spotlight has its perks, obviously. But, when it comes time to grow up and move on to more adult roles, lots of your favorite stars have found it V difficult. These stars have felt like because they played a child or a teenager for so long, they were instantly categorized to play those roles. I mean, think about it. How annoying would that be if you were 25 years old and forced to play someone who was a teenager?

Lots of these stars had been out of the teenage era in their lives for years but had to act in a way that felt like they were there forever. It can be super hard to find more adult roles and be respected as an adult entertainer in the biz. Celebrities aren't afraid to talk about this either. They aren't afraid to let the world know they are only looking for more mature ways to express themselves.

After hearing their stories, we don't blame them. Everyone from Miley Cyrus to Jake Paul to Selena Gomez are speaking out about breaking the mold from a kid friendly star to an adult celebrity in Hollywood and we're all here for it.

Nina Dobrev never wanted to play a teenager again after The Vampire Diaries.

Nina said, "If anything, the fact that [leaving] terrified me drove me even more. I needed to feel that fear of, 'Oh my God, what if I never get a job again?' That just made me want to work five times as hard to make sure that didn’t happen…I don’t want to play a teenager anymore. I want to play adult roles and be challenged and work with great filmmakers and tell incredible stories and that has meant being really picky."

Jake Paul wanted more grown up roles after he left his Disney Channel show, Bizaardvark.

Jake sent a Tweet to all of his after he and Disney Channel parted ways and said, "What's up Jake Paulers. I hate to have to throw crazy news on you guys all at once but since we are family I know you will understand be super supportive. Long story short… my team, Disney Channel, and I have come to the agreement its finally time for me to move on from the Disney family and Bizaardvark. Being a part of the Disney family for the past two years was incredible and a dream come true. I love my cast mates and will continue to support Disney but I have outgrown the channel and feel its time to move forward in my career. At this point in time I am wanting to focus more on my personal brand, my YouTube channel, business ventures, growing Team 10 and working on more adult acting roles. We have bigs in the works and I can't wait to share it all with you. This is just the beginning. Love you Jake Paulers. It's everyday bro!! Peace!!"

Bella Thorne wanted to move on from Shake It Up but it was much harder than it seemed.

She tried to get more adult roles but no one cast her thinking she was only good at playing Disney Channel roles. Bella explained, "Not only did fans pigeonhole me, but casting directors wouldn't read me anymore. They were like, 'No, we don't want her to come in because she's so Disney.' I had to literally beg for an audition. [A casting director] shook my hand in the audition and was like, 'I'm really sorry, I totally misjudged you, you're a great actress."

Miley Cyrus needed to break free from Disney Channel to show everyone who she really was.

miley

After leaving Hannah Montana, Miley went through a rebellious stage – if you will. She cut her hair off, she sang racy lyrics and came out as pansexual. She was just being Miley and that soldified the fact that she was only looking to act in adult roles and sing adult related content moving forward.

She said, "When I was on Disney, the thing that gave me the most anxiety was not knowing what to do with myself when Disney wasn't there to carry me anymore. And now I'm free…and I'm fine. Like, I lay in bed at night by myself and I'm totally okay, and that's so much stronger than the person three years ago."

Joe Jonas was over being a perfect, little puppet after Jonas.

He said, "The thing about the show was that some of the writing on it was terrible. It just ended up being some weird slapstick humor that only a 10-year-old would laugh at… We went along with it at the time, because we thought Disney was our only real shot."

In another interview Joe admitted, "Being a part of the Disney thing for so long will make you not want to be this perfect little puppet forever. Eventually, I hit a limit and thought, 'screw all of this, I'm just going to show people who I am.' I think that happened to a lot of us." Obviously, Joe was so dunzo with the kiddie roles.

Selena Gomez did not want the pressure of being the good girl any longer.

She told The New York Times, "It's all part of my story. I'm growing and changing. I was still under Hollywood and Disney and I was being held to this expectation of being the good girl. I knew deep down that this wasn't what I wanted to do—being exhausted of forcing something that wasn't right. I had to have moments where I was crying and I was like, 'Why am I not in love with what I do?' I was forced to get very uncomfortable for a while in order to make the decisions I made."

Vanessa Hudgens had a very hard time breaking out of the Disney Channel mold.

Vanessa wanted to move forward so badly and be cast in adult roles, but literally couldn't. She said, "High School Musical was incredible and it was so fun and it gave me so many fans which I'm very, very thankful for, but it also closed people's minds up as to which characters I could portray. So for a while I was kind of struggling and fighting for these roles that I just desperately wanted. It was hard and it was a struggle, but then again life is always a struggle. Definitely crossing over and being able to tackle these grittier parts was a challenge but I feel like I've done it! It's a whole new chapter!"

Demi Lovato found transitioning to adult roles was more difficult than she imagined.

Demi said, "I wouldn’t start out that young if I could do it over again. I don’t regret anything. It was difficult to transition from a child star to transforming into a mainstream artist. It’s something that is very challenging. You have to find your identity. For so long you’ve been molded into something and now you’re expected to figure out who you are very fast in front of the entire world. It’s definitely has been difficult, but it’s been a learning experience. I am still figuring out who I am every day."

At almost 30 years old, Crystal Reed was over playing a teenager on Teen Wolf.

Crystal needed a new direction. She said, "I felt like, creatively, there were things I wanted to do differently, and I wanted to explore other avenues of film and TV. I wanted to jump into different characters. You know, I'm 29. So I think the age difference was something I wanted to change as well because she's 17. I love the show so much. So I went to [executive producer Jeff Davis] and talked about it and he said, 'We'll write you a great ending.'"
