Years after John Green‘s hit novel The Fault in Our Stars was officially published, the characters of Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters were brought to the big screen. Starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, the total tearjerker premiered in June 2014, and quickly became a fan favorite.

The love story was all about a teenage cancer patient (Hazel) who falls in love with a cancer survivor (Gus). Between the quotable lines and romantic moments that the couple share, they face some ups and downs, especially when it’s revealed that Gus’ cancer has returned. The heartbreaking film and its accompanying novel have been responsible for a lot of tears since their respective releases.

“The book has had such a wonderful reach that I’ve gotten to talk to people about it who I never imagined would read it – young people living with cancer, parents who have lost kids,” John Green told the Washington Post in June 2014. “That’s tremendously rewarding to me. So I’m very grateful for that, and grateful that so many people have responded to the book so generously.”

A screen adaptation for another one of Green’s books called Turtles All the Way Down was confirmed in 2022, and will premiere on HBO Max. The story focuses on teenagers in their journey of love, mental health and the pressures they face as high school students. “I think the key to being relatable to teenagers is talking to them as if they were human beings instead of as if they’re cool teens or something,” Green explained. “If you’re open and authentic with teenagers they tend to respond pretty respectfully and really intelligently.”

Other than Shailene and Ansel, The Fault in Our Stars also starred Nat Wolff, Willem Dafoe, Laura DernSam Trammell and Lidewij Vliegenthart. Over the years, the cast has stayed in the spotlight and nabbed some pretty major roles in various TV shows and movies. Scroll through our gallery and find out what the cast of The Fault in Our Stars is up to now!
