J-14 is scouting out the hottest music around… and this week's pick is Rocky Loves Emily.

Here are five things you need to know about Rocky Loves Emily, whose debut album American Dream is out now!

  1. Detroit-based Rocky Loves Emily formed two years ago. The band took their name from the '90s movie 3 Ninjas.

  2. Singer Brandon Ellis tells J-14 that Rocky Loves Emily's single "Clueless" is the story of "a clueless guy who's too nervous to tell a girl how he feels about her, so she has to say it first." The "Clueless" music video parodies American Idol. So would Brandon have tried for the show out if he wasn't in a band? "I probably would have given it a shot," he says. "Why not, right?"

  3. Brandon relates most to the title track off American Dream. "It pretty much describes the past few years of my life in a nutshell," he says.

  4. Rocky Loves Emily's biggest influences are The Maine, A Rocket to the Moon, and We The Kings.

  5. Brandon says the coolest person he met while playing last summer's Warped Tour was The All-American Rejects singer Tyson Ritter. "He's super down to earth and spends a lot of time with his fans which I thought was really cool," Brandon tells J-14. "I told him that people say we look alike and he just laughed — not sure how to take that!"
