The 2017 American Music Awards are going to go down as one the most legendary award shows in awhile – we can just feel it. Niall Horan is performing along with Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, P!nk, Shawn Mendes, Bruno Mars and Christina Aguilera. Anything can happen. Even though Justin Bieber isn't set to get on stage, he's now reportedly back in Selena's life and everyone knows she thrives at the American Music Awards. It's possible he could attend just to show his support for Sel. And then the internet would indefinitely explode. Fans really can't predict what will go down. But, what we can do is look back at some of the most iconic and legendary performances in American Music Awards history.
From Taylor Swift's jaw-dropping performance of "Blank Space" to Miley Cyrus' bizarre yet kind of really freaking cool rendition of "Wrecking Ball" accompanied by a large cat on the screen in the back of her. The vocals, the costumes, the stage effects and everything in between is what made these specific performances stick out in our minds. Fans can only hope that there will be something this legendary at the 2017 American Music Awards. In no particular order, we've brought back the moments that will be very hard to top.
Justin Bieber dances in the rain at the 2015 American Music Awards.
In 2015 Justin performed three songs, "What Do You Mean?", "Where Are U Now", and "Sorry". But, it was what happened while he sang "Sorry" that was unforgettable. Justin actually danced in the rain and sang at the same time. He was soaking yet, playing around like a kid jumping through puddles. Not only did he look hot AF, but we don't think it had ever been done before. We're not sure who came up with the concept, but props to them because this show closer was top freaking notch.
Miley Cyrus sings while a giant cat lip-syncs at the 2013 American Music Awards.
This was the rebellious era in Miley's life. The phase where no one really knew what she was going to do next and it was terrifying. Her performance of "Wrecking Ball" was incredible but no one really ever got over the space cat in the back of her. The space cat that lip synced. It was odd and very meme-able but still, we question, why?
One Direction performs "Perfect" at the 2015 American Music Awards.
This was the boy band's last performance as a group at the American Music Awards which is why it was so special. They nailed it, obviously and looked so good on stage. Watching the video back seriously brings tears to our eyes. THE NOSTALGIA.
Selena Gomez performs "The Heart Wants What It Wants" at the 2014 American Music Awards and thanks Jesus.
Selena has always had a strong relationship with her faith. She really showed that side of her off during this awards show when she sang "The Heart Wants What It Wants". Toward the end of the performance, the camera zooms in on her face and fans can see her thanking Jesus. It's beautiful, it's special and it really was an iconic moment in AMA history. This year will be her first performance since the kidney surgery so it actually may top her 2014 gig. But, we'll see.
Niall Horan performs for the first time without One Direction at the 2016 American Music Awards.
This performance was seriously one for the books. The Irish heartthrob, for the first time ever, performed without his bandmates and it was incredible. Just Niall and the guitar playing along to "This Town" is something no fan ever knew they needed in their lives. We're not sure what he's going to perform this year, but his solo debut at the American Music Awards literally made us want to cuddle him all day every day.
Taylor Swift opened the 2014 American Music Awards with "Blank Space" proving she is queen forever.
Taylor's theatrical performance of "Blank Space" at the 2014 American Music Awards was like nothing we have ever seen before. The dancing, the stage props, the costumes, it was seriously like a mini Broadway show proving once and for all that no one can top her. It's jaw-dropping and just scandalous enough for an awards show like this but at the same time keeps it classy, which is why everyone can't get enough of her.
