Singer Alexis Jordan may have been on America's Got Talent, but she truly got discovered the same way Justin Bieber did -- through YouTube! Her current single, "Happiness," is blowing up the charts, and she stopped by the J-14 offices to tell us about her music, what it was like to meet American Idol's Simon Cowell and Jay-Z, and her biggest musical influences.
J-14: What made you want to put videos up on YouTube?
Alexis Jordan: My mom. After I got kicked off America's Got Talent, I was disappointed. My parents reminded me that everything happens for a reason. She said, "You should do YouTube." I started putting random covers up and I got really into it. I started doing my own remixes of different songs and different versions. People loved it, and I loved their reactions so I kept doing it -- and I still do it now.
J-14: What was your fave song to cover?
Alexis: It has got to be [Beyoncé's] "Halo." Another favorite was Drake's "Best I Ever Had." I got a great response from that. There is also a random video of me dancing in front of my camera to Kid Cudi's "Day and Night" -- I woke up and the next morning I had over 200,000 views!
J-14: Who found you on YouTube?
Alexis: I got discovered by Stargate. [At first] we were like, "Yeah, right," but then we were like, "Who's Stargate?" I didn't realize it but I was singing a lot of their songs. My mom looked them up and it was legit. So they flew us up to New York -- I had never been so I was very excited. I recorded a couple songs, met up with Jay-Z, and then I got signed. I didn't even know he was going to be coming into the studio. The first time I met him he was like, "Are you ready to work? 'Cause it doesn't stop." I've been working on this album for a little bit and I'm excited for everyone to hear.
J-14: Why did you decide to audition for America's Got Talent?
Alexis: My mom and sister heard an announcement, and I was like, "Sure, let's just do it." I had heard that Simon Cowell produced it. After the first performance, I actually met with him and he said, "You're brilliant." I was crying. I was 14, and I watched American Idol religiously. It was a great experience and a negative one at the same time.
J-14: How would you describe your sound?
Alexis: Pop with a little R&B and soul to it. I'm excited for everyone to hear my second single,"Good Girl," but "Happiness" is a really great record too.
J-14: Who are your musical influences?
Alexis: The big voices in the industry like Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston, and Beyoncé.
