Australian cutie Callan McAuliffe stars in I Am Number Four, in theaters today. Read on to get the scoop on his character Sam, what it was like working with Alex Pettyfer and Dianna Agron, and his most embarrassing moment on set!
J-14: The last movie you did was Flipped. How did you switch into the action film mode for I Am Number Four?
Callan McAuliffe: I just watched a whole bunch of action films. My character is a little less adept at fighting, so I didn't really have to do all the crazy stunts that the other guys had to do. I definitely had to shoot some guns and jump away from some explosions in slow motion and stuff, but that's about as far as it went.
J-14: Are you a lot like your character Sam in real life?
Callan: Not really! He's quite different to me. Sam is your comic relief, third wheel character that just runs around and annoys everyone throughout the entire film and just gets in the way. He was a super fun character to play.
J-14: What were Alex Pettyfer and Dianna Agron like on set?
Callan: They were loads of fun. Alex is just a phenomenal guy. As soon as they called "Action," he'd be right in the moment and he'd be acting his heart out. Then as soon as they called "Cut," we'd be joking around or throwing things at each other again. Same with Dianna. She's just such a beautiful person, such a warm personality. She was just a joy to be around. Pretty much the entire cast was just phenomenal.
J-14: Were you surprised when they started dating?
Callan: I saw it coming! But congratulations to them.
J-14: Did you have any embarrassing moments on set?
Callan: There's a scene where we're all running along the football field and we have to escape a scary monster thing, and everyone has to turn around and look at it and then turn around and keep running in horror. I had this giant shotgun, which was super, super heavy. Everyone else successfully turned around and then kept running and I turned around, tripped, and I fell over and rolled about three times. The best part is that after we'd gotten the successful take of that scene, D.J. called the entire crew over to the playback monitor and we watched me falling over in slow motion.
J-14: Do you still call Australia home?
Callan: We're getting an apartment here in Los Angeles, making a base here. We've got all the beds moved in and stuff, so it's going pretty well so far! [The flight to Australia is] 28 hours there and back, so it was kind of a pain. But it's good to go back and see my friends every now and then, so no doubt I'll be going back soon!
