Care Bears on Fire's punk rock band members Izzy and Sophie are only 15, but they've been rocking out for six years already! They just released their new EP Girls Like it Loud on October 12, and they stopped by the J-14 office to talk all about their new songs, how they came up with the band name, and what it was like to meet Justin Bieber on the set of True Jackson, VP.
J-14: How did you come up with your band name?
Izzy: We started the band when we were nine, so you have to take that into account when talking about our band name. But I really feel that in the six years we've been together, the band name has come to mean even more to us. We've interpreted it as taking something that people don't necessarily perceive as strong, powerful, or interesting, such as the Care Bears, and turning that on their heads and making it intense and strong, just like being young women in the music business.
J-14: What's your favorite song to play live?
Sophie: My favorite is "ATM," the single off the new EP. It's just a really fun song. It has a powerful message, which is something that we really enjoy, and it's a fun song to play. When I wrote it, I feel like it did have a more specific meaning [to me]. It's basically about a friendship where you feel like one person is just using the other person and trying to take advantage of them in any way.
Izzy: I feel like all our more recent songs are have a higher energy and really reflect where we are as musicians now, so that's really exciting. And "ATM" is kind of an anthem against being abused in a relationship or being taken advantage of in a friendship -- or any type of interaction. We really feel that it applies to so many people and can be interpreted in so many different ways. It's really great how the crowd responds to that song.
J-14: What was it like being on True Jackson, VP?
Sophie: It was amazing. The whole cast was incredibly nice. I don't act very much, so it was really fun to have that new experience and be able to do it with such a supportive, cool cast.
Izzy: We got to meet Justin Bieber He was super nice. He was a totally sweet, nice guy. He seemed very chill. He was learning his lines, and we were all kind of together. He seemed like a very, very chill guy. Super cool. Sophie wouldn't know.
J-14: Did you like touring with Nat and Alex Wolff?
Izzy: Oh my God, those guys are the best. We had the greatest time touring with them. I miss them so much! They've been recording though, so we haven't seen them in a while, but we talk to them. They're actually the coolest people. We became very good friends on tour. There was a lot of bowling in Houston.
Sophie: That was more just sad than funny, actually.
Izzy: That was embarrassing! Nat's like a really good bowler. And then the last show of the tour, we went on stage and had a silly string fight. We would play with them any day!
J-14: Do you guys have any pre-show rituals that you do before performances?
Izzy: We have a secret five-minute warm-up that people don't witness, but it really helps us get psyched and into the zone. And otherwise we have simple things like don't drink a Redbull before you go on because that's a mistake.
Sophie: I've had experiences with that.
Izzy: That was bad. We jump around and all that stuff. It's really important to have some continuity before shows so you kind of like get centered and ready to play.
