You may know Haley Kiyoko as Stevie on Wizards of Waverly Place, but she's got a new Disney Channel Original Movie coming out, Lemonade Mouth. The flick premieres on April 15 at 8 p.m. ET and included nine original songs! J-14 got to chat with Haley about the movie, her style, and what is was like touring with Justin Bieber!
J-14: Tell us about your character!
Haley Kiyoko: I play Stella Yamada and she's the new girl at Mesa High. She's kind of the rebel in the group. She starts this band to get her parents attention and she's very spontaneous. She sometimes definitely gets the band in a lot of trouble. She's kind of a free-spirit.
J-14: Are you a lot like her?
Haley: Yes and no. I was in student council at school so I definitely have like the leadership aspect. I like making a difference. Just standing up for what I believe in, but... she's kind of fearless and I definitely have my limits. I personally don't like getting in trouble. It's not that Stella does it to get in trouble, but [for her] it's okay to get into trouble if she stands up for what she believes in.
J-14: A lot people are comparing Lemonade Mouth to High School Musical. How is it different?
Hayley: It's not a musical. It's about a band and their story and how they reach success. So the songs are just the songs from the band. It's not like we're breaking into song through scenes or emotions. So it's not a musical number. I also think that this movie is a lot more edgy than High School Musical. We really kind of pushed the boundaries especially with the story lines of the individual characters. It really tackles real life and what kids really go through in high school. Going through having a step mom and going through losing a parent, the culture, your upbringing. Mo, who is played by Naomi Scott, is Indian so it's struggling with wanting to respect your culture, but also be able to date who you want to date. It's a movie people will really be able to relate to as opposed to a fantasy world and everything being smiles and giggles. Once you see it, you'll get that it's not High School Musical at all, but I hope that it does reach that success level because obviously that was amazing. I think Disney is hoping it'll be at that level.
J-14: How would you describe your style?
Haley: My friends call my style old man chic. I wear loafers and stylish sweatpants. I love to stay comfortable, so I definitely funk it up, but I'm always comfortable. I wear lots of hats and feathers and I kind of have a little obsession with Native American jewelry.
J-14: What was it like touring with Justin Bieber?
Haley: Madness! It was a dream come true. It was such a wonderful experience to live the touring life. We did 20 dates. We did the tour bus and it's crazy. You wake up in one city, you go to sleep in another city. You don't really know where you are a lot of the time. And [Justin] is a cool kid. He just wants to have fun. He wants to be able to share his talent, but he also wants to have a good time.
