Singer Matisse has seen it all - she's lived on the East Coast and in London, was a John Freida model, acted in the soap One Life to Live with her twin sister Alex when she was three, and was part of the singing group Brit and Alex with her sister too! But now Matisse has gone solo, starting with her infectious single "Better Than Her." We sat down with Matisse at the J-14 office to talk about her tunes, competing with her twin, and Paris Hilton!
J-14: How would you describe your music?
Matisse: I was on the dance charts on Billboard, which is the strangest thing for me because I never thought of myself as a dance artist. I grew up listening to all different styles of music, so there is a little bit of everything in there. When I was down in Atlanta, we were working with more R&B, very hip-hop producers. I've always loved R&B -- my favorite people are Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, and Prince -- so I thought I would lean more towards R&B while also being pop.
J-14: What's the story behind your single "Better Than Her"?
Matisse: It is basically just me! If you see a guy with someone who isn't treating him right or is not a nice girl, you're just saying to him, "I'm better for you." I've never been the type to steal a guy from a girl, and I'm not promoting that, but you know when a girl is not a good person.
J-14: Why did you decide to go solo?
Matisse: Alex decided to go back to school. We had been working together since the beginning, around maybe 15 or 16. We had done a single on the Step Up 2 soundtrack called "Let It Go" and promoted that in the U.K. As soon as we finished that, she decided she didn't really want to do it anymore. I was able to gradually get used to the idea because for about six months she was saying, "I'm feeling uninspired. I don't like the people we're around." It was around the election time actually with [President] Obama, and she was majorly inspired by him. I've only been by myself for about a year and a half -- she is at Columbia University and doing well. I think she'll have a song on my album, actually. She can come out and sing with me, hopefully!
J-14: As twins, did you ever feel like you had to compete with each other?
Matisse: I am more competitive than she is. I hear stories that if she was riding her bike next to me and got ahead of me, I would grab onto her and pull her back. She is not competitive at all! But for the most part, we've gotten along. I can understand how it is weird for other people, but we have been together our whole lives!
J-14: How does it feel to be compared to Madonna?
Matisse: I've gotten Paris Hilton before which isn't my favorite -- Madonna is not a bad comparison! I don't know what the comparison is, except for style. I don't mind unless it's something terrible -- I think it's natural and people always do it.
J-14: What are your guilty pleasures right now?
Matisse: I do get into the reality shows -- I feel like it's bad for my brain every time I watch them! I've been watching Millionaire Matchmaker and Keeping Up with the Kardashians. I love [Khloe].
Matisse also played J-14 Karaoke at the J-14 office -- and spilled deets on Taio Cruz! Check out her exclusive video here:
