Siblings Michael and Marisa are just 12 and 13, but they're ready to take the music world by storm -- they've been playing instruments since they were babies, have performed over 100 times, and even recently released their EP It's Like That. They're touring this summer as part of the Camplified Tour with Cody Simpson, Thomas Fiss, Ashlyne Huff, and Six Volt. J-14 chatted with the duo about their music, performing with siblings, and Marisa's love for David Archuleta and Nick Jonas!
J-14: When did you start playing music?
Michael: I started playing guitar when I was six, but I was really born musical, so I already knew I wanted to create and play music when I was only two. I remember not wanting to play with toys at all and just wanting to play with music machines, tape recorders, CDs, and computers. I wrote my first song when I was 4!
J-14: Which song on your EP It's Like That is the most personal to you?
Marisa: I love to perform "The Same" and feel the emotion in it every time I sing it. We wrote it after Phoebe Prince from Massachusetts committed suicide as a result of being severely bullied. In the song, the bystander sees her friends bullying a lone girl and decides to leave her popular group to go over and talk to the girl. I think that kids are the ones who can really stop bullying -- for kids to tell kids to stop bullying in a song is much more powerful and effective than for grown ups to say stop bullying.
J-14: How do you deal with people questioning your age?
Michael and Marisa: When we were 8 and 9, we showed up to perform at a festival and were greeted with, "You're Michael and Marisa? You look so much bigger in the picture. I hope I have a job tomorrow." They thought we were too young to be good. Once we start playing, they were very relieved.
J-14: Do you ever have to deal with any sibling rivalry?
Marisa: It may seem unlikely, but there really is no sibling rivalry at all. Being a boy and a girl and having opposite personalities may be part of the reason, but we really like each other -- you wouldn't have rivalry with your best friend! You'd want them to be happy. If we disagree, we work it out, like our parents do if they disagree.
J-14: Who is the coolest artist you've ever toured with?
Michael: When I was 8, I got to open for Drake Bell, and I had the best time going with him to do his appearances. I always loved his music and couldn't believe I was sharing the same stage with him.
Marisa: David Archuleta is the nice person, and he and has the best voice. It was an unbelievable experience being a part of his show.
J-14: Who is your celeb crush?
Marisa: Nick Jonas. We have similar personalities and even look alike. Maybe we'll run against each other for president in 2036!
