High School Musical Spin-offs

As the saying goes, we're all in this together! Especially when it comes to spinoffs of High School Musical, Disney's Emmy Award-winning musical about Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez's love story. In true East High fashion, the Disney Channel Original Movie that catapulted Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, and Lucas Grabeel into fame spawned many adaptations. And while most fans have all the words to HSM 2 and HSM 3: Senior Year committed to memory, there's still a lot not every Wildcat fan knows.

Like did you know that Kenny Ortega's hit film generated spinoffs in other languages? China made its own adaptation of the franchise and there were several movies developed specifically for Latin American countries. Songs from the musical franchise have been translated in Hindi, Taiwanese Hakka, Spanish, and more! That's right — HSM was so popular, it went international!

Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure

Sharpay did it all and so did the actress who played her, Ashley! This direct-to-video movie saw Ashley both starring and executive producing. In the film, East High's favorite mean girl moves to New York City after graduation and attempts to make it on Broadway. Austin Butler — who, IRL dated Vanessa AKA Gabriella Montez — played Sharpay's romantic interest, Peyton Leverett.

Madison High

High School Musical's infamous drama teacher Ms. Darbus was to be the star of Madison High, however the pilot was never picked up. The cast featured DCOM stars G Hannelius, Luke Benward, and Kat McNamara and the pilot introduced four original songs. The series' characters were thespian hopefuls dealing with all of the drama that comes with being part of the high school's theatre department. Apparently, Disney Channel put the kabosh on the series when G was cast in Dog With a Blog.

High School Musical: Get in the Picture

In 2008, Nick Lachey hosted High School Musical: Get in the Picture, a reality TV competition spinoff that hosted nationwide casting sessions. Finalists took part in a "summer musical program" to focus on their singing, dancing, and acting skills. The winner, Stan Carrizos, was awarded a recording contract with Disney and a music video to an original song to be shown during the credits of HSM 3: Senior Year. Finalists who didn't win also got to appear as members of the chorus in the third film.

Stan still makes music today and uses YouTube and Twitter to promote his work.

High School Musical: El Desafío

El Desafío — which translates to "The Challenge" in English — is an HSM adaptation for the Argentine demographic. The kids at High School Argentina participate in a Battle of the Bands. There can only be one winner and the band with the most teamwork has the best shot at the trophy. The movie also introduced eight new original songs.

After the immediate success of the first movie, the cast of HSM traveled the United States, Canada, and Latin American countries performing the concert tour of the soundtrack. With the exception of Zac Efron — who Drew Seeley stood in for — all the main cast members participated in the concert tour. (Side note: If you're wondering who the heck Drew is, he's actually the voice behind Zac Efron in the first movie!)

High School Musical: El Desafío Mexico

The Mexican version of HSM premiered in 2008 and starred the finalists of the a competition High School Musical: La Selección. The soundtrack can be described as Reggeton. High School Mexico features a song competition, the judges of which are musical group Jesse & Joy. The story follows Cristóbal, Mariana, Fernando, and Luli as they navigate the singing competition and try to win.

High School Musical O Desafío

Made especially for the Brazilian market, the spinoff began filming in 2009. Unlike its Latin American counterparts, the Brazilian movie had its own original script with a new plot line. While the main characters Troy, Gabriella, Ryan, Sharpay, Chad, Taylor, and Kelsie are still there, it was filmed in Rio de Janeiro. It also contained unique choreography.
