When Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder split, they were still co-starring on The Vampire Diaries so fans wondered what would happen to the show. Their characters Elena and Damon were madly in love and well, it might be a bit awkward to have to kiss your ex in front of a whole crew and pretend to be happy and in love, especially since Ian went on to marry Nikki Reed, who was one of Nina's friends. Although Nina did leave the series at the end of season six, she has since returned to Mystic Falls to reprise her role as Elena for the upcoming series finale, oh and she snapped a selfie with Nikki and Ian too. Casual.
Nina took to Instagram to share the pic of the trio writing, "Can't believe how time flies. Farewell dinner with team Somereed! So good catching up with these goofballs. All ❤," she wrote in the caption.
OK, WE NEED A MINUTE. These three haven't publicly hung out together, so this is kind of a big deal. But it proves that there isn't any bad blood between them at all and as Nina wrote, it's just nothing but love. Back in 2015 when it was announced that Nina was departing TVD, she did make it clear to fans that this wasn't because of any behind-the-scenes drama between her and her ex in the slightest.
"I've said this before, that we didn't break up because anything bad happened or because there wasn't love or friendship. I love him and the friendship is still strong and I think he's great and I care about him. And that didn't change. Yes, we're professional and that's fine. We were friends long before we dated and we still are now," she explained to E! Online.
She even gushed about how lovely she thought Ian and Nikki's wedding was.
"When I heard about the wedding, I thought it was beautiful. They look happy and I am happy and so I don't see why there should be a problem with that," Nina said. "The drama is in the media, it's not with us. But of course, we're on a teen drama show, everyone's going to look for drama. If there's no drama, there's nothing to write about. I just ignore it."
So there we have it. There was never any issue between Nina and Ian and now we have this precious squad selfie to prove it. They worked on a television series for years together and are proof that a solid friendship can stand the test of time. TVD forever indeed.
