In honor of Justin Bieber's 17th birthday, the J-14 editors are blogging about their favorite Justin Bieber memory. Here's editor-in-chief Rachel Chang's blog:
I've been lucky enough to be a teen magazine editor for eight years now -- and in that time, I've done quite a number of what we call "meet and greets" with up and coming talent... basically, it's an informal chat to get to know the person to see if we might consider including them in our magazine.
So back on May 18, 2009, when a young Canadian YouTube teen sensation stopped by the J-14 Magazine office for his first-ever magazine meet and greet, it was no different... we were just hanging out in my office with his mom Pattie Mallette pulling up his YouTube "kidrauhl" channel on my computer when I asked a then-15-year-old Justin Bieber if he would do a video for J-14 fans.
He immediately lit up. After all, filming videos for fans was his specialty. Just like a pro, he posed reading the latest issue of J-14 to start the video. As I pointed my camera and counted down, "One, two, three," and gave him a nod to begin, he started shaking his head violently back and forth. Was he trying to tell me, "No, don't film me?" But before I had time to get confused, he broke out with a huge grin and said, "Hey J-14, this is your boy, Justin Bieber."

Without any prep, he continued with the perfect video shout-out -- and even decided to sing a bit of "One Time" acoustically. As soon as he sang his first note, I almost dropped by camera. Wow. This kid truly had chops. And it was absolutely clear that he was a star in the making.
When I hit "Stop" on my camera, I couldn't help but shout out, "WOW! That was amazing." Justin flashed an innocent grin. But I immediately asked him, "What was that little head shake you did right before we started filming?" And that's when he broke out into his trademark knowing grin and explained that's how he gets his hair perfect. And it was in that moment that Justin Bieber became a superstar in my eyes.
I asked him if he would mind doing another video to show our fans how he does that -- and he happily demonstrated his now famous hair shake on video for the very first time.

Okay, so maybe I was way intrigued by Justin Bieber's trademark hair a year before everyone knew his name... and maybe my personal amusement led me to film it for everyone to see for the first time, but it was in that very instant that I knew this kid was going to take over the world in a way no one had ever done before.
And now almost two years later, he's ruling the music and movie charts, commanding the social networking world, and becoming a pop cultural sensation like we've never seen before.
To think it all started in the J-14 office 22 months ago. Since then, we've painted the office purple in honor of the purple sweatshirt Justin Bieber wore to the office that day. After all, J-14 was among the first to catch Bieber Fever --Â and we love being reminded of it every day.
Justin, we're so very proud of everything you've done... and so grateful that you chose us to be your very first teen magazine ever. We love you and send you the sincerest wishes for a very happy 17th birthday from the bottom of our hearts!
Happy birthday Justin!
