In March 2021, the Wizards of Waverly Place actress noted that she’s “forever grateful” to Francia in a Twitter post celebrating World Kidney Day. “Thank you for blessing me,” Selena wrote, when reposting the actress’ thread about her “kidney donation process.”

Selena’s social media post came as a surprise to some fans as there have been longstanding rumors that the duo had a falling out after their transplant surgeries. In 2019, RadarOnline reported that the pair was no longer friends. Neither of them ever spoke out about the speculation surrounding their friendship, but the “Bad Liar” songstress did post a birthday tribute dedicated to Francia in July 2020. “Happy birthday to an incredible human being that I’ve known since I was 14,” Selena wrote via Instagram Stories. “Your grace, strength and passion for who you love and what you do has always inspired me. I love you always.”

How Long Have Selena and Francia Been Friends?

The pair first met in 2007, and according to the Bring It On: All or Nothing actress, they “just clicked,” she said during an interview with Latina from 2013.

Did Francia Donate Her Kidney to Selena?

Selena revealed via Instagram that Francia “gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me” following complications from Lupus.

“I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering,” the Monte Carlo shared with fans in September 2017. “It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you. Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery. And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa.

At the time, Francia shared her own social media post, writing, “I am beyond grateful that God would trust me with something that not only saved a life, but changed mine in the process. This was part of our story, and we will share it soon, but what is important now is that this is not the only story.”

Forever Friend

While they may not be related, the duo have called each other “sis” throughout their entire friendship. “When we first met you gave me a necklace that says ‘a sister is a forever friend’ your support and words this night meant the world to me. I love you sis! My forever friend,” Francia wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post from 2014.

Kidney Transplant

Both Selena and Francia opened up about the surgery during an interview on TODAY in 2017.

“One day [Selena] came home and she was emotional. I hadn’t asked anything. I knew she hadn’t been feeling well,” Francia recalled. “She couldn’t open a water bottle one day. She chucked it and she started crying. And I said, ‘What’s wrong?’ and that’s when she told me. And she goes, ‘I don’t know what to do. The list is seven to ten years long.’ It just vomited out of me: I was like, ‘Of course I’ll get tested.’”

Mom-Approved

Selena’s mom, Mandy Teefey, called Francia “family” in a since-deleted Instagram post from 2017. “Selena gained a kidney, I was able to keep my little girl, but I also gained another daughter,” she wrote. “Thank you to everyone who was there for Sel, Francia and our families. We survived from all the love, prayers and God.”

A Helping Hand

“Selena has been a huge help in my career,” Francia told Rogue magazine in 2018. “I’ve seen her grow and she’s seen me grow and we have a lot of conversations about the industry. In seeing how much she has to go through … I’ve learned a lot myself, and so I’m really grateful to her and what she’s confided in me and taught me.

TikTok Trend

Francia and Selena reunited for a hilarious TikTok video on July 27, 2022 posted on Selena’s account, where they played the TikTok trend of “He’s a ten, but … ”

“He’s a ten, but he hates your best friend,” Selena says, waiting to hear Francia’s answer. “Mmm, I hate her too, sometimes,” says Francia, much to Selena’s shock. After a bit of a laugh, Selena admits, “Honestly, fair enough.”

The Aftermath

During a November 2022 interview with Rolling Stone, Selena declared that Taylor Swift is her “only friend in the industry.” Francia, for her part, seemingly responded, writing “Interesting,” in a since-deleted comment on an Instagram post shared by E!. It was quickly screenshotted and reshared by fans online.

Selena seemingly hit back, commenting, “Sorry I didn’t mention every friend I know,” on a TikTok video about the situation.

Where They Stand Now

Francia, for her part, addressed rumors that there’s bad blood between herself and Selena saying, “There’s no beef, there’s salsa,” when appearing on the “Good Guys” podcast in August 2023.

“She and I went public with our situation years ago and honestly we had to. The press got a hold of the story and we wanted to tell it,” Francia said of the kidney transplant. “As for what’s going on lately, does anyone prep you for this kind of stuff? Never. We never get prepped for this kind of stuff. It always catches me by surprise. I don’t know if it’s good or not. … No one forced me to do anything. It came out of the genuine kindness of my heart.”
