At just 12-years-old Zach Marks has created the very first social networking site just for kids called Grom Social. Zach sat down with us to tell us all about this new kid-friendly site and how he got the idea.
J-14: What makes Grom Social different from the other sites out there?
Zach Marks: When you sign up you put your parent's email in so your parent gets a copy of everything and every two weeks you get a Grom Report Card which is a list of the kids you became friends with, what they clicked on and your chat history. Five or six people including my mom and dad are on it every day monitoring. You can't do anything bad on the site like curse or post a bad picture.
J-14: What made you decide to start this social network?
Zach: It all started when I convinced my dad to let me go on Facebook, I had it for about a week or two and then I was seeing adult language that I shouldn't have been seeing and one of my dad's good friends caught me and my dad deleted it. We had a pretty big argument. I told him there was no social networking site out there that was fun, safe, and educational. We sat down at the dinner table and started drawing out the name and coming up with the idea, characters, and everything.
J-14: How does it work?
Zach:You log on to your profile so you can make a 'Gromatar' which you can customize and all your friends are the characters. Then there are videos, Grom help videos, if you need help chatting or just general info. Then you click your home button and it shows all the character's posts.
J-14: Do you have advice for other kids your age who are maybe thinking of doing something similar?
Zach: I'd say if you want to accomplish something, there's a lot of good ideas kids come up with, but if they want to stick with it they have to set their mind to it.
J-14: What else do you hope to accomplish?
Zach: I just want a lot of kids on a safe network, because they want a social network so they can have fun too.
Will you be checking out Grom Social?
