J-14 is scouting out the hottest bands around... and this week's pick is Boyce Avenue.
Here are five things you need to know about Boyce Avenue, whose new album, All We Have Left, drops tomorrow, June 15!
Florida-based brothers Alejandro, Fabian, and Daniel Manzano started the band in 2004 and named it Boyce Avenue after the streets they grew up on. Fabian studied architecture at the University of Florida and Daniel graduated from Harvard Law School, but Daniel moved back to Florida so the brothers could work on their music. "I was so glad to leave that behind," Daniel admits to J-14. "I've always wanted to perform and just loved music, so this is where I feel comfortable."
"Broken Angel" is one of the band's fave songs off All We Have Left. Alejandro says the song about his best friend is one of the most personal ones he's ever written. "I've seen what a handful of my closest female friends have gone through, whether it was with a father figure or going through a rough relationship -- a lot of their experiences were pretty rough childhoods, but somehow they manage to still shine through those bad experiences," he explains.
Boyce Avenue will hit the road for their second U.S. tour (with one Canadian stop!) starting June 17 in Vancouver, BC. The wrap up in Chicago on July 16. Get a full list of tour dates here.
During his senior year of high school, Alejandro was named "Mr. Pineview." "At some point in Florida, it became funny and cool to subject the guys to that kind of thing where you do the dog and pony show, answer questions, and come out in a tuxedo," Alejandro tells J-14. "There was casual wear and formal wear, but it was very talent oriented." Daniel admits that it really was based on talent but jokes, "He did rip off his shirt New Moon-style!"
You'd think the boys would have some sibling rivalry since they spend so much time together, but Daniel says they respect each other's space. "We grew up in a close-knit environment -- we shared a room as kids, and now even on the road we often share a room," he says.
Boyce Avenue performed their single, "Every Breath," at the J-14 office -- check out their acoustic version of the song here:
