J-14 is scouting out the hottest bands around... and this week's pick is Cali Swag District.
Here are five things you need to know about Cali Swag District (yep, the "Teach Me How to Dougie" guys!), whose album The Kickback drops February 15!
C-Smoove (aka Smoove), Yung, JayAre, and M-Bone make up Cali Swag District. "We actually did not come up with the name," Smoove admits. "Our visionary Big Wy had the name before he had the group and when he saw all of us together he said that we were it. We actually did not like the name at first, but after a while it grew on us. Now there is a real meaning to it -- 'Cali' is where we are from, 'swag' being that we have our own individual swag, and 'district' being that we are all from the same district in Inglewood, CA."
After a friend went off to college at Texas Southern University, he told the group that they should do a song about "The Dougie." "The dance was popular where we are from, but not as popular as it was in Texas," Yung explains. "So we decided to do it, but never did we think it will become as big as it is today!"
CSD's album, The Kickback, drops in February. While recording, the group threw a "kickback," which is an invite-only laid-back get-together that eventually turns into a big party, and that inspired the album title.
The group has met a ton of celebs, and the coolest ones have been B.o.B., T-Pain, Snoop Dogg, and Doug E. Fresh (he created the Dougie dance!). "Snoop Dogg gave us some good advice, and Doug E. Fresh is always giving us advice on how to go far in this business -- he's become like a big brother to us," Yung tells J-14.
The boys definitely aren't crushing on the same girls! Yung likes Ciara and Kim Kardashian, Smoove digs Keri Hilson, and M Bone is crushing on Alicia Keys. And then there's JayAre, who says he doesn't have a celeb crush!
