J-14 is scouting out the hottest bands around... and this week's pick is Cobra Starship!
Here are five things you need to know about Cobra Starship whose latest album Night Shades is out now!
Cobra Starship consists of lead vocalist Gabe Saporta, guitarist Ryland Blackinton, keytarist Victoria Asher, drummer Nate Novarro, and bassist Alex Suarez. Gabe formed the band in 2005 after the breakup of New Jersey pop-punk band Midtown, in which he was the lead bassist.
The band skyrocketed up the charts with their singles "Snakes on a Plane (Bring It)" ft. Travis McCoy, William Beckett, and Maja Ivarsson), "Good Girls Go Bad" ft. Leighton Meester, and now with their new hit single "You Make Me Feel..." ft. Sabi, which paved the way for the album's completion. "It almost felt like we couldn't get started on the stuff that was for the album because we didn't have the single that would be the vehicle to help make the album go," Gabe tells J-14. "So once we got it, it kind of lit a fire under our butts and got us really moving on the record."
Their songs aren't just bubblegum, fun music to dance to, their tunes also possess a deeper meaning filled with different musical genres. "You have to dig deep to get the good stuff. If you're just writing trivial stuff that doesn't mean anything it's like whatever - you can turn out a hundred of those," Gabe tells J-14. "But I think for us, what I'm proud about our band is I think we kind of have these fun songs but they also have significance underneath especially when you scratch the surface which is why our fans stick with us because there's always layers and layers you can peel under."
A diverse variety of pop, dance, and rock tunes make up their latest album Night Shades, the album that the band is most proud of to date. What inspired the name? "Night Shades are a family of vegetables like eggplants thought to be poisonous in ancient cultures. But the interesting thing about the night shades, the plant of the night shade, the flower of the plant only blooms at night," Gabe tells J-14. "So much like us, we're kind of zombies during the day and then at night we come to life."
Cobra is currently getting ready to hit the road on a South American tour with Justin Bieber who they share a special memory with. At the 2009 Jingle Ball in Sacramento, CA, Justin Bieber shared the stage with the group when challenged to a dance-off with Gabe. However, he took to hijacking their drums since his broken foot was still healing. "Even though I won the dance off he kind of showed me up by rocking the drum set," Gabe tells J-14. Ryland adds, "If it happens again you'll have to break your foot on purpose." You can see the dance off here.
