J-14 is scouting out the hottest bands around... and this week's pick is Junior Doctor!
Here are five things you need to know about Junior Doctor whose album Clumsy Words and Bad Pickup Lines is out now!
In 2007, Junior Doctor was formed by lead vocalist and guitarist Mark Hartman and his two fellow medical school classmates, drummer Jarrod Kearney and bassist Richard Peidro, with dreams too large for the school hallways. "After playing together only a few times it was clear to all of us there was something special about the group and decided to throw caution to the wind and set out to share what we were doing with the rest of the world," Mark Hartman tells J-14. "Getting to travel with your best friends, meet new people, and share your music with them every night seemed like just about the best thing in the world to me." They left med school, used their tuition money to purchase music equipment, and prepared to release their first EP Take The Pain. Back up vocalist, guitarist, and keyboard player Terrence Donnelly recently joined the trio.
This pop-rock band's latest album Clumsy Words and Bad Pickup Lines is primarily about the roller-coaster ride of relationships. "It has happy songs, sad songs, and even really angry ones. It's funny how a single person can send you on such a crazy emotional roller coaster. Now, the title itself, to me, is representative of a failed attempt at doing something 'good,'" Mark explains. "When a guy uses a pick up line or stumbles over his words when talking to a girl, its always because he wants her to think he is worth being around. But as guys we usually [mess] it up."
Some of the band's biggest musical inspirations consist of Blink 182, Michael Jackson, Jimmy Eat World, The Beatles, and even Elton John.
Though he started off in medical school, music has always been something Mark found fascinating. "I have always found music to be an amazing mystery. I love that sounds made by instruments can evoke emotion, and when you pair it with lyrics that fit the same mood you create something that is more powerful that just about anything in this world," he tells J-14. "I don't quite understand it, but I love it!"
Their latest single "Uh Oh" is all about love at first sight which they filmed with Degrassi's Cassie Steele. "In all of our minds, there would have been no one better for the role. She is such a sweet girl and extremely talented! We are all huge fans of her work so it was such a cool experience to get meet her, work with her, and become friends with her," Mark tells us. "We still keep in touch, and you just might see a Cassie Steele/Junior Doctor collaboration in the future, just saying..."
