J-14 is scouting out the hottest bands around... and this week's pick is Sick Puppies.
Here are five things you need to know about Sick Puppies, whose third album Tri-Polar is out now.
Sick Puppies is made up of Shimon Moore, Emma Anzai, and Mark Goodwin. The band hails from Sydney, Australia, and takes their name from the book "Sick Puppy" (it was suggested by Shimon's dad!). "When Emma and I double booked the music room at our high school neither of us would leave," Shimon tells J-14. "We started jamming and found out that we knew all the same songs by the same bands, so we decided to start our own band at the end of that week."
Sick Puppies' single "Maybe" is currently all over the radio. Shimon says the song was inspired by his and Emma's move to the U.S. "Taking your life and your dreams in your hands is scary," he says. "Once we found out that a lot of people who listen to our music were feeling the same way, we thought it made sense to write a song about it. There's nothing you can't do."
Shimon tells J-14 that the most personal song to him off Tri-Polar is "Odd One," which also happens to be his fave tune to perform. "That was written about feeling like outcasts and loners in school, and we also found out a lot of people who come to our shows come to feel connected to something. That's exactly why Sick Puppies was formed."
Shimon and Emma's biggest musical influences are Rage Against the Machine, Incubus, Silverchair, Foo Fighters, and Green Day.
The one thing Shimon and Emma both have to bring on tour to remind them of home is Vegimite.
