Here are five things you need to know about Sparks The Rescue, whose debut album, Eyes To The Sun, is out now!
Sparks The Rescue got their name from Nicholas Sparks (yep, the author who wrote The Notebook and The Last Song) -- his book The Rescue was sitting on the floor of guitarist Toby McAllister's bathroom, and they thought it would make an awesome band name. When they discovered someone already had a band by that name, they added Sparks to the front, and the rest is history! "We were going to do Sparks The Walk To Remember -- that was an option too," Toby jokes.
Singer Alex Roy tells J-14 that the song he feels most connected to off Sparks' debut album is "Hello Mexico" because he got to record a lot of the instruments on that track. "I'm the lead singer, so I don't usually get a chance to play on the record, but on that song I did, so I was pumped about that," he says. "When I wrote that song, it was always something very close to me, something special."
Alex and Toby were influenced by bands like Green Day, The Offspring, and Counting Crows, and Alex even started playing in Blink-182 cover bands in the 8th grade! "I remember just inviting my friends over and being like, 'We're gonna play Blink songs in our family room!'" he tells J-14.
What's Sparks current claim to fame? Not only do they love playing hacky sack, they're also tour Frisbee champs. "We beat The Morning Of in Ultimate Frisbee last week!" Toby exclaims.
Alex and Toby even gave J-14 -- and Justin Bieber! -- an exclusive shout-out before their show with Cash Cash this past weekend in New Jersey:
