J-14 is scouting out the hottest bands around... and this week's pick is Swimming With Dolphins!
Here are five things you need to know about Swimming With Dolphins, whose debut album Water Colours is out now!
From Minneapolis, MN, singer/songwriter Austin Tofte first got his start as a band member in Adam Young's Owl City. In 2008, Swimming With Dolphins was formed as a side project with Adam before Austin decided to leave Owl City and make this band his main focus.
Inspired by the ocean and childhood memories, Water Colours was created while Austin was in seclusion at his father's home in rural and snowy northern Minnesota, wanting to find an escape from the city.
It was there he found inspiration in classic rock musicians such as Van Morrison who helped give the album a more traditional feel than his past EP. "I think being
outside the realm of people who are only making digital music -- not that it's bad -- made me listen to some of my favorite rock albums and incorporate influence through that."
Though the album has a pop-synth digital feel, its songs are far from fluffy. "I want to be real with people. A record encapsulates a period of time in your life, and that's just what this was, really." Austin said. "It's not a super happy record in terms of lyrics, but it sounds happy."
It's been a long time coming and Austin is excited to start a new chapter of his life with the album completed. "I'm ready to be on the road," Austin said. "I've spent a lot of time writing and in the studio, and I've got a band now, and we're all excited about it. It's awesome."
