J-14 is scouting out the hottest music around... and this week's pick is Auburn.
Here are five things you need to know about Auburn, whose single "La La La" is out now!
Minnesota native Auburn is known as the "Princess of Beluga Heights," a nickname she takes in stride. "I never ever in life felt pressure to live up to something -- I just try to do my best at whatever it is I'm doing, and if that's not enough then I guess, I'm not supposed to be doing it," Auburn tells J-14. "[But] it's a dope title!"
Writing her own songs is important to Auburn, but she fell in love with "La La La" even though it was written by fellow Beluga Heights artist Iyaz. It helped that he wrote it with her in mind! "I actually let Iyaz know that he was kinda dead on [with the lyrics], because I can get irritated by a smothering dude," Auburn tells J-14. "I'm young so that fit perfectly with me. I wish I wrote that song."
Auburn wrote her first song at age 12 -- fittingly, it was called "Too Young To Fall In Love." Today most of her songs are still about love and heartbreak. "I like to write based off experience and the most relative topic for girls my age would be dudes," Auburn says.
Auburn's musical influences really vary -- as a kid, only gospel music was allowed in the house. Then she got into R&B music like TLC and Aaliyah, and during high school she started listening to rock acts like Nickelback and Simple Plan. "I'd try and turn my music low if it was a rock song, because I knew my cousins would be like, 'What are you listening to?' I loved it, but I didn't want them to make fun of me for it. Then it got to the point where I didn't care!" Auburn admits.
If Auburn could duet with anyone, she'd pick Justin Bieber! "I love that kid," she tells J-14. "I would love to do a song with him. Everyone is a Belieber!"
