J-14 is scouting out the hottest music around... and this week's pick is BC Jean.
Here are five things you need to know about BC Jean, whose debut album drops in early 2011!
San Diego native BC Jean wrote Beyoncé's hit song "If I Were A Boy." "It was surreal to know that Beyoncé was interested in a song that started off as a therapy writing session, as I like to call it," BC tells J-14. "It is my personal heartbreak story that is close to my heart. I still get chills when I hear Beyoncé singing it on the radio."
BC's debut single, "Just A Guy" is a follow up to "If I Were A Boy," which she says was a sad and bitter song about wishing a guy was different. "'Just A Guy' is the acceptance of the boy," she explains. "It's about being satisfied with human nature and yourself enough to realize that boys will be boys. You can't live with 'em and you can't live without 'em -- but I would much rather live with 'em!"
The singer/songwriter is gearing up for the release of her upcoming debut album -- she's written all the songs already! "There is a song 'Anyone' that is probably one of my favorites," BC says. "It's true vulnerability from me with sincere lyrics -- it's the search for true love."
The first records BC ever bought and "listened to religiously" were No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom and Alanis Morisette's Jagged Little Pill. She also loves listening to classics by Aersomith, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Journey, and Janis Joplin.
There are a ton of people BC hopes to one day work with, but if she could duet with anyone, it would be a new American Idol judge! "I've always thought it would be pretty rad to sing with Steven Tyler," she tells J-14.
