J-14 is scouting out the hottest music around and this week's pick is rising star Jack Skuller!
Here are five things you need to know about Jack Skuller whose debut EP Driver's Permit is due out this Spring!
Singer-songwriter Jack Skuller may only be 15-years-old (until January 26 -- when he turns 16!), but he's always known music was going to be a huge part of his life. After all, his father was a musician so he grew up surrounded by music. "I use to go to his shows all the time and watch him absorb the essence of performing. I knew at a very young age that that was what I wanted to do because it's a very powerful thing, being on stage and reaching out to an audience," Jack tells J-14. "Shows are the greatest, playing for people. It's really exciting."
Not only does Jack play the guitar, but he also knows piano, bass, and drums. "When I was little I took some piano lessons but my parents always told me once they knew I was in to music that starting with piano is just good for everything. It even helps you in school," Jack says. But it's the guitar that really won over Jack's heart. "When I'm not doing something I'm just playing around on the guitar. I always have my guitar with me in the house, I carry it with me all around."
The words Jack uses to describe his sound is 'vintage-pop' with a mixture of classic rock-and-roll. "You hear pop in the lyrics, like a Beatles kind of pop, and then the melodies go from 50's influences to The Black Keys," Jack explains to J-14. "It's a lot of different stuff."
Jack recently recorded a cover of Adele's hit "Rumor Has It" that he posted up on his YouTube Channel. "I love Adele. Her voice is amazing, just so soothing and perfect and that song, I heard it and I listened to it a million times and it's played in my family's car all the time and I just decided to have some fun with it," Jack says. "It was really fun to make.
His debut EP Driver's Permit, out this spring, is the perfect title and metaphor for Jack's bright future. "I knew when I was going in to the recording process that by the time this came out I would be close to having my [driver's] permit and I think the EP and the way that I'm maturing can be summed up by 'driver's permit' because it's taking a new step in my life and I'm going somewhere new," Jack tells J-14. "It's an adventure and I'm loving all of it."
