J-14 is scouting out the hottest music around... and this week's pick is KDrew! Here are five things you need to know about KDrew whose debut EP Free Vol. 1 is out now!
R&B-pop artist KDrew grew up in his New Jersey home surrounded by music. With his father, a DJ ad a drummer, it was only natural that Kevin Drew took interest in music at an early age. Fourth grade was when he first decided he wanted to make music his career. "It was like a career day, fourth grade, and I went home and I told my dad, 'Hey, I want to be in the music industry,'" KDrew tells J-14. "He kind of looked at me a little funny cause he was like 'oh, it's real hard and what not but you can definitely do it.'"
High school wasn't easy for Kevin, a jock who played football, baseball, track, and basketball, who also wanted to pursue a music career. "It was kind of like at the same time I was playing sports I was also doing play practices and chorus and choir practices. I would go from one thing to sports and all of my friends would kind of be looking at me like, 'What are you doing?'" he tells J-14. "I was always looked at as sort of the sports person so then they kind of looked at me as a wuss, some hard situations and what not but I got through them. My senior year I was like, 'You know what? I'm big man on campus now. I'm joining choir and chorus.'"
With musical inspirations from Michael Jackson and Maroon 5 to The Beatles and Coldplay, you're going to hear a huge variety of music on KDrew's EPs. "I've got some rock songs that are going to be on there, I got some dance songs, some have dub-step in them," KDrew tells us. "You're going to hear a totally vast wide variety of music on there."
"Body & Soul (She Got Control)" is the first single from his first EP. "It's a song about how guys can overreact towards their girlfriends when they go out," KDrew tells J-14. "That's pretty much the whole song in a nutshell."
KDrew's first EP is out now and his second (out of seven, due to be released at the first of each month through May 2012) is out December 1. You'll be able to snatch both for free at KDrewMusic.com!
