In 2011, Rebecca Black released the song “Friday,” which has since become a cultural phenomenon! The YouTube star has continued to have a major career online since the song was released in February 2011.

After the song took the world by storm, Rebecca appeared on various TV shows, was a guest star in Katy Perry‘s “Last Friday Night” music video and the tune was even featured on Glee. Over the years, the internet personality has released more music while continuing to remind fans that, yes, she is the girl that created the catchy tune.

When celebrating the “Friday” 10-year anniversary in February 2021, Rebecca surprised fans with a remix of the song. She’s also celebrated each “Friday” anniversary with a heartfelt message.

“Nine years ago today a music video for a song called ‘Friday’ was uploaded to the internet,” Rebecca shared via Instagram in February 2020. “Above all things, I just wish I could go back and talk to my 13-year-old self who was terribly ashamed of herself and afraid of the world. To my 15 -year-old self who felt like she had nobody to talk to about the depression she faced. To my 17-year-old self who would get to school only to get food thrown at her and her friends. To my 19-year-old self who had almost every producer/songwriter tell me they’d never work with me. Hell, to myself a few days ago who felt disgusting when she looked in the mirror! I’m trying to remind myself more and more that every day is a new opportunity to shift your reality and lift your spirit. You are not defined by any one choice or thing. Time heals and nothing is finite. It’s a process that’s never too late to begin, and so, here we go! This might be a weird thing to post but the honesty feels good if nothing else.”

After her whirlwind rise to internet fame, Rebecca went on to rack up tons of followers and even made a name for herself in the music world. She’s also become kind of a sensation on YouTube and even starred in a docuseries titled Life After Friday.

“If there’s one thing that I’ve wanted for my entire life, especially after ‘Friday,’ is to find a community of people who understand me,” Rebecca told People in February 2023. “I understand the redemption arc story of it all, but this is not the endpoint. I’m just getting started.”
