Obviously the One Direction hiatus has given each of the guys a chance to branch out and do something all their own, but it’s also provided them with plenty of opportunities to share all of the challenges that came with being part of the world's biggest band. Louis Tomlinson recently shared with fans how difficult it was for him to wrap his head around the level of success he achieved with the guys, and now Liam Payne is following suit by opening up about his own mental health issues when 1D was at its peak.

In a new interview with UK's The Sun, Payno admitted, “I shouldn’t have been able to do as many shows as we did, if I’m honest about it, if I’m brutally honest about it. Going out and putting that happy smile on my face and singing the songs, honestly, sometimes it was like putting on one of those costumes, going out there and, underneath the costume, people don’t really see what’s going on.”

Though his roughest moment came a few years ago in 2015, when the boys cancelled a concert in Belfast, which at the time they claimed was due to Liam feeling unwell. Though that wasn’t entirely true, as the “Bedroom Floor” singer explained that he pulled out of the concert due to the heartache he was feeling from breaking up with then girlfriend, Sophia Smith.

“I let it get to me that day. I wasn’t in a good place, and unfortunately I was going through a rough time and I let it get to me a little bit too much. That was it. The more we did, I just don’t think we stopped and celebrated enough how great things were and I think that’s what got on top of us in the end,” he explained.

These days it seems that Liam is in a much better place in his career and personal life. He’s happier than ever with Cheryl and their little lad Bear, and now he’s taking over the charts with the rest of the guys – though this time it’s happening all on their own. Honestly, nothing makes a Directoners day better than knowing the guys are happier and healthier than before, and we couldn’t agree more.
