If 2017 isn't the year of Selena Gomez, we don't know what is!
The Wizards of Waverly Place star made an appearance at the Netflix press day to promote her upcoming series, 13 Reasons Why. Selena found interest in this project over six years ago and is now executive producing it. She recently called the series her 'passion project' and fans will soon find out why.
During the press day, Sel was asked how she can relate to 13 Reasons Why. Her answer is as eloquent as you might think, but she touched on a few different topics that were super eye-opening. She revealed how kids today really need to see something that is going to shake them, alluding to the idea that this is exactly what the Netflix series will do. Also, how her lifestyle growing up led her to attend one of the biggest high schools in the world – the Disney Channel.
So how does she personally relate? Selena said, "It’s been a little amplified, I wouldn’t say it was worse but it definitely made it a little bit harder. And to be frank with you, I was actually going through a really difficult time when they started production. I went away for 90 days and I actually met tons of kids and this place that we’re talking about, a lot of the issues that these characters are experiencing, I would say yes, I’ve had to deal with it on a scale whether it was just kids or growing up in the biggest high school in the world which was Disney Channel."
It's been previously reported that Selena went to rehab to get treatment for Lupus.
She continued, "It was also adults that had, you know, that had the audacity to tell me how to live my life and it was very confusing for me. It was so confusing I had no idea who I was going to be or what I was going to become and it definitely hits home and that's why I wanted to make sure I was still part of this project in any way. I would never let anyone take this away from me and my mom.
But it’s a very important part in me and I think this is what people need to see. We're not going to post anything that's like 'hey be empowered!' That’s not what they want to see. Unfortunately, kids don’t care. They don’t care. They have to see something that’s going to shake them. They have to see something that’s frightening and follow these people who are, they are going to instantly fall in love with these characters. I want them to understand it. I would do anything to have a good influence on this generation. It’s hard. But, I definitely relate to everything that is going on."

Wow, what a statement! Selena not only reveals just how much pressure she was undergoing while on the Disney Channel but also how she sees this younger generation. It's a bit shocking just how much the adults surrounding her during the Disney Channel days affected who she is now as a person.
All we have to say is, bravo Selena! It's clear that she is done hiding and ready to speak her mind no matter what kind of topic or issue comes her way. We have a feeling that 13 Reasons Why is going to be a huge success!
