Fans are wondering if Aaron Carter's eating disorder had anything to do with his recent arrest on charges of driving under the influence and being in possession of marijuana. Though the troubled former child star has been open about his struggle with depression and addiction in the past, his run-in with the law might have been just one big misunderstanding since marijuana can be used to treat his disorder.

Back in April, the "I Want Candy" singer took to Twitter to defend himself from fans who he claimed "body shamed" him for being too skinny. Many of them speculated that his small frame might be a sign that he's abusing drugs again, but he revealed that he's been struggling with a health issue that he described as an "eating disorder."

"By the way, y'all wanna know why I'm so skinny? It's because @ [at] 19, I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia, I didn't choose that. Be kind to me," the 29-year-old wrote in a now-deleted tweet. "It's a terrible stress condition that affects me having an appetite and I'm sorry this is the way I am. Basically, I have an eating disorder."

While fans speculated that Aaron might have been in possession of marijuana to treat his hiatal hernia, he released a statement on Twitter shortly after he was released and he set the record straight about the reason why he was arrested. He explained that he has spent most of the summer traveling with his girlfriend across the southeast states on his tour promoting his new song, “Sooner or Later.” While driving through Georgia, he realized that a new tire that was recently placed on his car was not properly aligned, so he stopped at the nearest Auto Zone to have it fixed.

While he was waiting for his tire realignment, he claimed that local police officers arrested him “with aggression” inside the store and he was told that his rights to an attorney had been revoked. Aaron explained that he has a medical license for medical marijuana in order to treat his anxiety, so he was not breaking the law and he alleged that he was just targeted because of his “celebrity” status.

In his statement, Aaron also addressed his older brother — Backstreet Boy and Boy Band star Nick Carter — for releasing a statement regarding his arrest via Twitter. Nick stated that he would be there to help Aaron “get better,” and Aaron did not hold back in his response.

“If my own blood (Nick) truly cared about my well-being, why wouldn’t he call me directly and have a conversation instead of making this about him through a very public forum?” Aaron asked in his statement. “That’s not cool at all to use me for his PR and kick me while I am down. I love my family despite it through thick and thin.”
