Say What: Selena Gomez Is the Most Followed Person on Instagram and She Never Even Wanted It

Instagram

Selena Gomez has 127 million followers on Instagram – the most out of anyone else on the platform – and she really doesn't even care. I mean, how awesome do YOU think that would be? Imagine the number of likes you would get on your measly piece of avocado toast that you thought was so not basic at all, but then (looking back) ended up being the most basic summer breakfast photo on your feed? You'd get millions for even that kind of pic. Selena does. However, the "Bad Liar" singer has made it a point in the past to tell her fans she doesn't want to see their bodies on Instagram or something you think is cool, like your smeared avocado. She wants to see what is in your heart. Ah, yes, inspiring, we know.

But really, this mantra of hers can go along way. She was nominated for Time magazine's "Firsts" series, honoring women who have accomplished big things in the past year. Selena, who tries to always be open and honest with her fans on social media, was given the title of The Tastemaker. But, just because Instagram and social media have been a big reason why she skyrocketed to global fame so quickly, doesn't mean it is always such a positive thing in her life.

She said, "I am glad I grew up in the time that I did. I think it’s really hard to be a kid now, especially with social media. I can’t imagine what it would be like to grow up with that. It’s already difficult to get up every day and just feel good about yourself without seeing the highlights of everyone else’s life."

It sounds like if Selena was a kid today, she may not have as many followers. She may not want as many followers or to follow even as many people as she does. (By the way, Sel follows 284 people.) She may not have cared to grow her social media as much as she has because of the negative feelings she gets from it. But, she's always thinking of her fans. She tries to be a role model and post things about her life they should be seeing. It's always glitz and glam. She's a real person and Selena tries to show that off so just maybe they don't feel so bad about themselves or their lives when one of her photos pop up.

She continued, "That’s why I like being vulnerable with my fans on social media. I like that they’ve seen my mistakes. I try to use that as a way to connect with them. That’s all I can do. I hope that they know that strength doesn’t mean that you have to put on a facade. Strength is being vulnerable."

Seriously, bravo! If it wasn't for the Selenators out there, and anyone else who might be watching, Instagram would pretty much be useless to her. Like we said, Selena might be the most followed person in the world, but she never asked for it.
