Every year, speculation grows toward the month of December about who Time magazine will nominate as 'Person of the Year'. We all have our guesses, but usually, we're completely off the mark. Time magazine seems to come up with someone I wouldn't have exactly thought of but is totally deserving of the honor – and has seriously made an impact on our culture and society in the past year. It's true that women, specifically women who have come forward as sexual assault victims, were the real heroes of 2017. If you haven't heard by now, Time magazine nominated each and every one of those women who were brave enough to tell their story as 'Person of the Year.'

It was incredible to see that not only have these women been recognized for what happened to them over the past twelve months but now they are being acknowledged for how they didn't let their abusers win. Time magazine, once again, hit the nail on the head. But, I have to look at it another way, in a more negative light which is a shame because this should be something we celebrate. Demi Lovato harshly criticized the mag after word got out about who the runner-up was for 'Person of the Year' and I have to wholeheartedly agree with her. Time isn't getting all of my praise.

Again, if you've been hanging out under a rock for the past couple days, I'd like to inform you that Donald Trump was the runner-up. Honestly, I'm really not a huge politics person. My family and friends have strong opinions both for and against President Trump, but for me, it's not something I'm incredibly passionate about. So, my distaste for Time magazine nominating President Trump as the runner-up has nothing to do with what he has or hasn't done in office. It has to do with the women who have already accused him of sexual assault, which is exactly what Demi was trying to get at as well.

Demi fired off a series of tweets that began by saying, "Time mag highlights brave women coming forward against sexual assault on the cover but names a man with sexual assault allegations against him runner up to person of the year.. Really @TIME? #hypocrites."

She continued, "I’ve become less vocal about my distain for certain people over the past year because it only divides our country even more but this is worth speaking up about. @TIME mag – very disappointed in your hypocrisy and disrespect toward the women on your cover."

Demi finished by saying, “To be named POTY by @TIME it should be for doing something positive or brave LIKE the women on the cover. It’s annoying that it’s just about impact on the news.”

~internally screams~ YOU GO, GIRL. Demi has not always said things I agree with on social media, but this time she was so right it's hard not to side with her. While Time magazine did an awesome job of showcasing the 'Person of the Year', they really fell short when it came to the runner-up. It completely goes against what they tried to do. These women bore their secrets only to win a race that almost had an abuser himself outdo them. It's baffling. And really, if Time thought President Trump should have been the runner-up, that's fine. Just don't share that information with the public and not expect all hell to break loose.
