We've all gotten to know the headstrong characters from The Fosters. Mariana, Callie, Brandon, Jude, and moms Lena and Stef are all so amazing for different reasons that it'll be super hard to ever say goodbye. Hopefully, we'll have many more seasons to come, but for now, fans are focused on finishing up Season 5.
When does The Fosters come back?
Freeform just announced on their Facebook page that the show is coming back January 9, 2018 at 8pm/7c. Season 5A premiered on July 11, 2017. The midseason finale was on September 5, 2017. The finale left fans on a major cliffhanger. Callie (Maia Mitchell), A.J. (Tom Williamson), and their friend Ximena (Lisseth Chavez) are trapped inside a church after declaring sanctuary for Ximena, an illegal immigrant being pursued by I.C.E. New photos show them camping out in the church, but we won't know what's next for the characters until the fifth season premieres again in 2018.
What is The Fosters Season 5 about? What happens in The Fosters midseason finale?
In the fifth season, we see the kids go through a lot of major life changes. Callie is determined to get her life together and starts classes a local art school. She even meets a special someone named Aaron (Elliot Fletcher). Mariana and Jude (Hayden Byerly) start an underground newspaper to expose some of the sneaky things their school is up to. And all the while, everyone is just trying to live a normal life.
It's prom night! Mariana is throwing an alternative prom in a warehouse and Brandon (David Lambert) tries to ask Grace (Meg DeLacy) to the dance, but it's a little complicated. Meanwhile, Callie and A.J. are fighting to save their friend, Ximena's life. She's an undocumented minor and ICE is threatening to take her away. The episode ends with the police trapping Callie, Ximena, and AJ inside a church.

Like many of your favorite television shows, you can find The Fosters on Netflix! Seasons 1 through 5 are all on the streaming service. After the second half of the season ends next year, you can expect it to hit Netflix just a few months after. Unfortunately, the show is no longer on Hulu. As another online alternative, you watch episodes of the series on the Freeform website with a login.
Is The Fosters over?
It was recently announced that the The Fosters has been canceled and will be ending with a three-part series finale this summer. Cierra Ramirez, who plays Mariana in the show, started a hashtag to save the show. Soon after, #RenewTheFosters was trending on Twitter! Her castmates Maia Mitchell and Sherri Saum joined in by tweeting and retweeting the hashtag. Sadly, their efforts did not end in a renewal. However, Freeform will start a spinoff series featuring Maia and Cierra, following their characters Callie and Mariana in Los Angeles.
Fans love The Fosters for its dramatic storylines and selfless characters. We can't wait to see what the characters get up to in the second half of the fifth season. And, hopefully, there are many more seasons of The Fosters spinoff show to go. It's not goodbye forever.
