From 2009 to 2011, Demi Lovato was known as Sonny Monroe in Disney Channel’s Sonny With a Chance. The songstress starred alongside Sterling Knight, Tiffany Thornton, Brandon Mychal Smith, Doug Brochu and Allisyn Ashley Arm in the show, which lasted for two seasons before changing its name to So Random! and saying goodbye to Demi’s character.

In 2010, the “Skyscraper” singer departed from the series “to focus on my music,” she told People in a statement at the time, so her character was written off and the show was refocused.

“It’s kind of sad for me that a chapter of my life has ended but there couldn’t be a better time for me to move on,” Demi’s statement read. “I don’t think going back to Sonny would be healthy for my recovery.”

However, when Sonny With a Chance was on TV, Joe Jonas, Raven-Symoné, Selena Gomez, G Hannelius and more Disney Channel celebrities had guest-starring roles on the series. Selena, for her part, played herself on the show as an actress hired by Sterling’s character, Chad, to portray Sonny in a biopic about his life. At the time, Demi and Selena were best friends offscreen, so this casting made total sense! Years later, Selena did appear on So Random! for a performance of her song “Who Says.”

As for Joe’s Sonny With a Chance guest appearance, the Jonas Brothers member was on the show without his fellow band members for the “A So Random! Holiday Special” episode where he played himself. This was long after Joe’s Camp Rock days, so it’s no surprise that he would make a special appearance.

Following the major Sonny With a Chance chance in 2010 after Demi’s departure, So Random! only aired for one season before the franchise said goodbye to Disney Channel once and for all. Those looking for some childhood nostalgia are able to binge both shows via Disney+ and see what other celebrity cameos they can spot — because there are some pretty surprising ones!
