If you’re not already obsessed with singer/songwriter Alec Benjamin, then prepare yourself. Once you listen to his songs that have the most heartfelt lyrics and make you feel like he’s singing directly to your soul with his angelic voice, yeah, you’ll be hooked.

His latest song, “Death of a Hero” dropped today and is already claiming the top spot on Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist. This is yet another very personal song joining the ranks of “If We Have Each Other,” “Let Me Down Slowly,” “Paper Crown,” and “The Boy in the Bubble” – some of his other more confessional and honest AF songs. It took Alec some time to realize music is his true passion.

Alec, now 24 years old, didn’t get into music until he was a junior in high school. And as he shared on The Zach Sang Show, he thought it would help him impress girls! He ended up falling in love with making music instead and hasn’t gotten a girlfriend out of it, LOL. But so far after playing his first headlining show this summer, he’s realized there’s no greater feeling than meeting his fans and seeing them connect to his songs.
“I write music to express myself obviously but when you see that your music, people care anough to learn the words to a song? It’s a very special thing,” Alec said to AOL Build.

He used to play music for people at concert parking lots.

Alec moved to California to chase his music dreams and at the same time, was going to college, a promise he made to his parents. He got signed to a label and quit school to make music his full-time focus, but he ended up getting dropped from the label. He made an entire album’s worth of tunes but since the songs belonged to the label, he left without any of the music he created.
This led Alec to play the new songs he was creating for people while they waited in line at concerts. He went to artists like Shawn Mendes and Troye Sivan’s shows putting on his own little gig in the parking lot. Oh, and did we mention he then went on to play at a festival with Shawn?

He opened for Camila Cabello.

Alec has now come full circle and even opened for Camila during a few of her Never Be the Same Tour stops.
“2 years ago I got dropped from Columbia Records and was singing in parking lots outside of concerts
this year im opening up some shows for @Camila_Cabello
i know i have a long way to go but that’s pretty cool
thx for supporting me thru the ups and downs,” he wrote on Twitter.

He has more new music on the way.

Along with heading out on his first solo headlining tour, Alec is set to write with Julia Michaels, who had reached out to him via Twitter after hearing one of his songs. His goal is to create a full-length album, but he has plans to drop more songs before that. So, get ready. Alec is about to take over.
