When the news broke that the second season of 13 Reasons Why is for sure coming to Netflix, viewers quickly started to ponder about the future of their favorite characters and what roles they would be playing in the plotline for the upcoming episodes. The story mainly focused on Hannah Baker and what led to her suicide, but another story that viewers followed was about Alisha Boe‘s character Jessica Davis’ rape and how she coped with it.

Show creator Brian Yorkey said he will be deeply exploring more about Jessica’s story and her assault in future episodes — meaning that her part of the show is far from over.

“I want to do Jessica’s story the deserved justice of following her as she goes back to school, as she tries to begin to recover from what happened to her. It’s something that millions of young women go through,” he told EW.

Alisha has recently revealed that she noticed that her character was, unfortunately, being slut-shamed by some viewers and being victim blamed for her assault which is the reality for a lot of young women and men who go through similar situations.

“I thought everyone would sympathize with Jessica because of what she’s been through, to me that made the most sense. She’s a survivor and she’s been trying to deal with it and she’s acting out because of it.”

“I was getting comments and being tagged in photos and fan theories that I can’t help but look at, but basically, people are slut-shaming Jessica. They’re calling her a b**** and they’re saying she deserved it that I should take Justin back and I shouldn’t be that drunk at a party and it made me take a second and step back and realize, wow, we as a society are not able to not blame the rape survivor but more so we want to take Justin’s side because he’s charming and has a nice smile.”

YIKES! That is a lot to process.

“And that makes me so hurt and angry,” she said. “And it makes me want to get more involved in being an advocate for women and men who are sexually assaulted and are survivors of rape because the conversation still hasn’t changed.”

Spoiler Alert. Jessica’s story dealt a lot with acceptance, forgiveness, and betrayal from not only her boyfriend Justin Foley and from her abuser who was someone she considered to be a friend. She coped through substance abuse and was in denial about the situation since she had no recollection of the night and eventually had to tell her parents about her assault.

We hope that the show exploring this more in depth helps others out there dealing with a situation like this or that it helps them support people in their lives living through what Jessica is living through.
