Days after Ansel Elgort was accused of sexual assault in a since-deleted, lengthy Twitter post, the actor has spoken out.

“I was distressed to see the social media posts about me that have been circulating in the past 24 hours,” he posted to Instagram on Saturday, June 20. “I cannot claim to understand Gabby’s feelings but her description of events is simply not what happened. I have never and would never assault anyone.”

He continued, “What is true is that in New York in 2014, when I was 20, Gabby and I had a brief, legal and entirely consensual relationship. Unfortunately, I did not handle the breakup well. I stopped responding to her, which is an immature and cruel thing to do to someone. I know this belated apology does not absolve me of my unacceptable behavior when I disappeared.”

For those who missed it, a fan alleged that the Fault In Our Stars star had assaulted her when she was only 17 years old.

“I was sexually assaulted a couple of days after I turned 17. I was only f**king 17 and he was in his 20s. He knew what he was doing,” she began in the post, from an account that has since been deleted. “Ansel Elgort sexually assaulted me when I was 17.”

The fan alleged that she met him after DM’ing him on Twitter and he gave her his private Snapchat account.

“I didn’t think he’d ever see my DM,” she said. “I was just a kid and a fan of his.”

The twitter user claimed that she was “sobbing” and in “pain” and that she “didn’t want to do it.”

“He said stuff like, ‘You’re going to be such a beautiful young lady when you’re older,'” the fan alleged.

She claimed that she didn’t tell anyone at the time because the told her it could “ruin his career.”

“I sat there for months wondering what I did wrong. Wondering why I felt so used. Years later, I have PTSD. I have panic attacks and I go to therapy,” she continued. “I am ready to talk about it and finally heal. I just want to heal and I want to tell other girls who have been through the same s**t as me, you’re not alone.”

She also shared some pictures of her and the 26-year-old, as well as alleged screenshots of their conversations.

As fans know, the star rose to fame after he played Augustus Waters in TFIOS alongside Shailene Woodley. He also acted in the Divergent series, Baby Driver, Carrie and more. He’s currently set to star in Steven Spielberg‘s upcoming West Side Story remake.

He concluded his Instagram message with, “As I look back at my attitude, I am disgusted and deeply ashamed of the way I acted. I am truly sorry. I know I must continue to reflect, learn, and work to grow in empathy.”

Ansel did not immediately respond to J-14‘s request for comment.
