It’s safe to say collectively, the world’s jaw hit the floor when Ariana Grande casually dropped a short-haired selfie on us all. Gone were her signature high AF ponytail and miles long hair she’s always rocking. But she took the extensions out and let us catch a glimpse at her natural hair length and girl was SLAYING the lob. Proof:

But it looks like this short ‘do was only temporary and part of something even more epic. See, many, at first, speculated the 25-year-old songstress had cut her hair in the wake of her calling off her engagement to comedian Pete Davidson. Usually, when someone is dealing with heartbreak, they might make a drastic change to their appearance for a whole “goodbye, this is the new me,” starting over vibe. But c’mon now, this is Ari we’re talking about here!

Instead, she channeled her breakup into a hit number one song called “thank u, next,” and it looks like the music video is going to be next level, as she’s slowly confirmed to fans that she’s recreating classic movies like Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, and 13 Going on 30. And it’s for the part of the vid where she’s bringing to life the one and only Jenna Rink from 13 Going on 30 that led the singer to change up her hair.

Between her outfit and her hairstyle that totally encompass Jenna Rink to the max, it’s clear Ariana is doing all she can to really bring each of the movie characters to life again in her own way, while still paying homage to the OG versions. She took to Twitter to share another Jenna selfie, writing “big time magazine editor” along with the fire pic, which is a line from the movie.

And while she truly looks like a queen with her Rapunzel-esque locks or with the shorter length, we have a feeling girl isn’t going to give up her sky-high, cascading ponytail just yet. It’s a part of who she is, after all.

It’s always going to be a part of who she is. Case closed on the great hair debate. At least for now.
