The 33-year-old star dealt with depression and anxiety throughout her life – and those struggles are reflected in the music. While the sound is fun and high-energy, Ashley believes it does have a darker undertone.

“I’ve co-written every song on the album, and I also am so specific on the sound and what the album stands for, which is an upbeat album, but it has a dark undertone of anxiety and depression,” she explained in an interview with AOL. “I think it’s something that the world needs right now. It happened so fast and it came together so fast that I think the universe just made it happen.”

We know what you’re thinking – it’s been a while! Gearing up for this new chapter is something she said she didn’t want to rush into. This new music comes after nearly a decade-long hiatus she took from releasing original music. The actress and singer, who got catapulted into fame from starring in Suite Life of Zack and Cody and High School Musical, explained that this new venture has been in the works for quite a few years now.

Ashley said in a statement, “I’m so excited for this album. I’ve been in and out of the studio for the last four years and teaming up with John Feldmann has allowed me to create the most authentic album to date. I’ve co-written every song on the album and it’s so personal to me. Looking forward to sharing it with everyone!”

Not only were Ashley’s first two albums, Headstrong (2007) and Guilty Pleasure (2009) super successful, but she also launched a Los Angeles-based production company with her sister Jennifer called Blondie Girl Productions that’s responsible for some seriously awesome shows, including Young + Hungry, starring another Disney Channel alum Emily Osment. Oh, and Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure? Yep, that was Blondie too. It took some time before people started taking her seriously. But boy, did she prove them wrong!

“When I started the company it was really hard for people to take me seriously. When I was pitching to networks, because they obviously knew me as an actor and we were a female production company, it was a little difficult at first. I knew that I really wanted to get physically in that room and put female voices in the spotlight,” she told Forbes.

Despite the fact that it has been a long time since Ashley put out an album, she was been working her tail off in other areas of her career. And on top of all that she’s been working on, she also found time to put out covers on her YouTube channel. The most iconic of them all? The time she and Lucas Grabeel reunited for the High School Musical duet of our dreams.

We already know this new album is going to bop to the top of the charts – the release can’t come soon enough!
