When the shocking news of Disney being unable to land an actor to play the role of Aladdin in their live-action remake of the animated classic hit the airwaves, fans and the internet of course began to flip out. What followed was hundreds if not thousands of tweets from the public with pictures of actors who they felt would be nothing but perfect for the role.

One person in particular stood out among the rest, and that was Victorious star Avan Jogia. Fans couldn’t help but point out the fact that not only does he look an awful lot like the cartoon, but the actor can also sing and dance – something that’s pretty much required of the person who takes the role.

An almost unofficial campaign for Avan to get the role or at least an audition began, and it seemed like the former Nickelodeon star had heard fan’s cries.

Rumors then began to swirl that he had actually heard fan’s cries, sent in an audition tape to the film’s director, Guy Ritchie, and now he was in the running to land the lead in the film.

Everything seemed to be falling into place perfectly, and the actor was becoming everyone's favorite to land the part, but Avan might have just put an end to fan’s hopes about seeing him take on such an iconic character with a single tweet.

The actor wrote to fans, “Though I am flattered by all the support, there is something to be said about not believing everything you can read.”

So does this mean he never auditioned to play Aladdin in the first place? Or is he trying to tell fans that he did send in a tape, but isn’t in the running to land the lead?

We’re not exactly sure, but the only fans will for sure know whether or not he was able to nab the role will be when Disney announces the official cast list.

Until then, we’ve got our fingers crossed for Avan.
