V

V’s real name is Kim Taehyung. In Korean culture, Chinese characters are incorporated in the Korean language. Those Chinese-borrowed characters are called Hanja. Each Hanja name has a unique meaning. “My Hanja means ‘everything will be OK and all your wishes will come true,'” V explains.

Suga

Suga’s friends and family know him as Min Yoongi. His Hanja name is so tricky to recall that he keeps it saved on his phone to remember it! In fact, he even has a hard time comprehending the meaning. “I don’t understand the origin of the name,” he smiles. “Maybe it means I can grow up and live my life well.”

Jin

Jin was given the name Kim Seokjin by his grandfather. As you can see, his stage name includes a bit of his real name! Why’s that? Well because Jin is into it! “I really like the meaning of my name,” he shares. “It means ‘to be a great treasure.'” We have to agree that’s a pretty accurate description.

Jungkook

Like Jin, Jungkook was named by his grandfather. He’s unclear of the meaning of his birth name, Jeon Jungkook, but he has an idea of the translation! “Maybe it means ‘be a center or pillars of the nation,” he guesses. “Something like that.” Just the center of the entire nation, NBD!

RM

RM’s real name Kim Namjoon is so difficult to write out in Hanja that he often forgets how to do it. “The meaning of my name is ‘the genuis from South,'” he shares. This couldn’t be more fitting for RM, who during is second year of high school had an IQ level of 148!

Jimin

Jimin’s real name is easy to remember – it’s Park Jimin! Like RM, the Hanja meaning definitely came with some pressure. “My name was given by my grandfather,” he shares. “And it means ‘my wisdom will go higher than the sky.'”

J-Hope

Jung Hoseok is J-Hope’s real name. It turns out the Hanja translation ended up being a great indicator of his future career. “I heard that it was picked by my parents when they went to a temple,” he says. “It means ‘the name that will spread to the whole country.'” More like spread to the whole world!
