Remember the Disney Channel Original Movie Cloud 9? The movie premiered in January 2014, and was one of Dove Cameron‘s first-ever roles on the network.

The actress played the role of snowboarder Kayla Morgan who gets kicked off her snowboarding team following an incident involving former professional snowboarder Will Cloud (played by Luke Benward). In order to make up for her mistake, Kayla ends up working alongside Will at his family’s dog kennel. While at work, she convinces Will to help her snowboarding technique improve so she can win the Fire and Ice competition. Throughout their training, Kayla begs Will to teach her his famous move, the “Cloud 9.” Eventually, he teaches her the move, which she perfects in order to win the Fire and Ice competition.

“Something I really love about this film is that it’s not Kayla’s story and it’s not Will’s story. It’s about their journey together,” Dove told Entertainment Weekly in December 2013. “She learns that she was missing a lot more in her life than she thought when she meets Will Cloud. It’s a story about a girl who wants a man to stand beside her as she saves herself.”

At the time, Luke also gushed over Cloud 9 while chatting with EW.

“I’m really proud of this movie and I’m really excited for people to see it,” the Dumplin’ star shared while introducing viewers to his character. “He’s dealing with an injury and he can’t live his dream and do what he was meant to do. He’s hurting and he’s a broken person, and through the film he progresses and heals and through his relationship with Kayla. He starts to get back on the horse — or board.”

Surprisingly, the flick was actually produced by Ashley Tisdale. The High School Musical alum told EW, “It was such a great story and I thought it was great that it appealed to both boys and girls and has a lot of cool action with snowboarding but still has a great story which is believing in yourself.”

The Descendants actress also reflected on her experience filming the movie during an October 2019 interview with POPSUGAR.

“I was 16 when we filmed it, which sounds like a normal age for Disney but is actually quite young to be a lead in anything,” Dove recalled. “It was bizarre. It felt comfortable. I always felt like a very social person. I made so many friends. It was a bonding summer camp experience.”
