Demi Lovato dropped her sixth studio album, Tell Me You Love Me, last night celebrating this huge milestone with a listening party and hundreds of her biggest fans. The songstress partnered with JBL Headphones for an exclusive pop-up experience in New York City and we here at J-14 got to stop by and see it all for ourselves. Lovatics were treated to an appearance by their idol, of course, but aside from that, JBL headphones lined the walls of the room. Fans were able to not only listen to each song on Demi's new album but also hear, in her own words, the inspiration behind each track.
Demi's voice on the record is incredibly powerful, but it was the meaning behind her new song, "Lonely" that really caught our attention. She said, "'Lonely' is about being lonely in a relationship. You know the person you're yearning for is toxic and you're better off without them, but you're still wanting their attention."
Hmmm…in between the screaming fans and the racks of Demi and JBL merch, we couldn't quite pinpoint who this song could actually be about during the listening party. But, today, we think we've got a handle on it. Our conclusion? It could very well, possibly, be about her ex-boyfriend of six years, Wilmer Valderrama. There's one major clue in the lyrics that gave it all way. Demi sings, "The month was June / The smoky sun, our fatal run / It ended too soon."
YOU GUYS, Demi and Wilmer broke up in June and literally everyone thought it was too soon. #MINDBLOWN. To be exact, it was on June 3, 2016, that they wrote this message to their shippers, "After almost 6 loving and wonderful years together, we have decided to end our relationship. This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more than anything that we are better as best friends. We will always be supportive of one another. Thank you to everyone who has offered us kindness and support over the years. With only love, Wilmer & Demi."
Now, this is all making sense. When she said that they realized they are better as friends, maybe this actually meant that the relationship was toxic. They yearned for each other yet the whole thing maybe just wasn't a healthy situation to be in. To be clear, this is all speculation but for some reason, it all fits together so perfectly. It's pretty amazing that Demi felt comfortable enough to share the inspiration behind each song with her fans at the Demi x JBL album listening party – especially this song. Without her words, this song could have just been another sad break-up anthem. But it's SO. MUCH. MORE.
After looking at the lyrics, listening to her voice and the explanation, it HAS to be about Wilmer. We literally had no idea she felt so lonely when all of this happened. This song is absolutely heartbreaking. Ugh, poor Demi! But, it's not really a shocker. They were together for a super long time. At least she got one thing positive from the split – an amazing song.
